460 lifespan
I need some info on the 460 engine, I have a 94 f-350 4x4 with a 460 that I use as my welding truck that has about 3000 pounds on the back.It has 204,000 miles on it and it is starting to have some issues and I wonder how long is that motor good for?The a/c needs a new compressor and the shocks are shot and the seat needs to be replaced ,I just need to know if I sink more $ into it if the engine will last or should I buy something else.Any tips on testing(like compression) how good the motor is now will help too. Thanks.

no real engine issues but have had to replace the following; alternator, timing chain cover and heater core.Need to replace the following; a/c went out, needs new bench seat, shocks are shot ,needs new steering dampner, front rotors are pretty thin and front tank fuel gage works 50% of the time. The rough ride has also broken some of the tabs that mount the dashboard to the cab and the glove box latch has broken out of the dash.I like this truck and dont have to pay for it and that helps out being a small shop, but if I spend all that time and money I want it to last.any advise will help. thanks.

Back in January of this year I wrote about my pal Mark and his amazing f250. It is a 1986 regular cab, with a 460, and is creeping up on the 500,000 mile mark. It uses a whole lot of oil and is real down on power but it is driven daily. Mark and I are from the buy it new and drive it right into the ground school of trucks, but this one is really something special. Good maintenance and some luck I suppose. I would spruce up what you have and drive it until you can't stand it a minute longer. Then get a new Super Duty, life is very short, drive what you like.

well i havent heard of a 460 that doesnt go to 300,000miles, at which point it will usally break the timing chain, they also usally start burning oil at 160,000 miles. is it 4wd cause the rotors on my 2wd truck were like 35 bucks a piece it probly wouldnt be too expen sive to replace the parts you listed as long as you can do it your self, the one expensive thing will be the ac. anyways good luck with your decision and one more quick question, please tell me you replaced the timing chain while you had the timing chain cover off.

it is a four wheel drive and I did replace the chain,The main thing is that when it goes down I am losing money from welding ($50.00-$75.00 per hour) and may lose a customer b/c I cant get to the job on time.I can do all the work myself just in summer so busy that theres no time.I will do a compression test and make list of stuff and go from there. thanks. o-yeah, it rides like crap and with no a/c in the south you start to hate it- I drive my 04 all i can,but dont want to ruin it yet.
