Question Towing Package Wiring

My 2001 F-350 has a 7 pin plug. There are 4 wire beneath the dash but no plug in for a trailer brake as should be there if it came with a towing package. Where do the wires from the 7 pin plug in the rear terminate?

Let me get this clear. Are you factory equipped with a tow package? I have to believe that all F-350's are. In that case your plug is indeed there. Remove the panel under the steering wheel. On the far right in the cavity there is the plug.

if you open the cover under the steering wheel(held on by 4 large plastic screws) and look to the right side of that opening you will see a black wiring plug behind that plug and through the metal bracket is a gray open plug with silver pins in it. that is where you plug in the pigtail that should have come with the truck. you also have to put in 2 relays in the under hood relay box (right next to the under "hood" fuse box) and install 2, 30 amp fuses in the under hood fuse box for it all to work

Thanks. I'll look again. I didn't see it when I searched the first time. Maybe I was looking in the wrong place. Did not know about the relays and fuses.

this is my second prewired Ford tow vehicle and it's the first I have heard of any relays or fuses. I use a Tekonsha Prodigy. Doesn't need anything but the pigtail.

You should have a plastic bag with the pigtail and extra fuses & relays as a small kit. It has instructions for the wiring. Check the glove box that is where my last two were placed. If you don’t find it call your dealer. It should have been supplied when you took delivery.

then someone else aready put them in because they do not come installed from the factory. some dealers may put them in before delivery but normally when you buy a truck new you will get a trailer tow hookup kit with the pig tail, relays, fuses and instructions on how to install them in a plastic bag.

I am just getting my 2001 SD 250 ready to tow a trailer and found that I had to hunt down the 30 amp fuses that were installed in the wrong positions in the distribution box under the hood. Tow charge (# 16) fuse was in the shift on the fly feature (#17) that device is not installed on this truck and the other that feeds 12 volts to the electronic brake controller (#28) was found in the power seat adjustable pedals position (# 18) position, I don't have ajustable seats or pedals either. I had to purchase the 2 relays that go into the little piggy back relay box located under the hood near the power distribution box. So look around, you may have some spare parts stowed on your truck that can be used. I have a prodigy controller coming and also the Ford truck adapter cable that will plug into the wiring harness under the dash near the radio.

Okay, well that's weird. I was the first owner and I installed it. I did not use the pigtail provided by Ford I used one made for Ford supplied at extra cost from Tekonsha, I guess.

At any rate in the glove box was the trailer brake hook up only half of a harness with a clip at one end and nothing except cut aires on the other. The bag had no fuses or relays.

I have towed with it once in August of last year, also in May, and this July when I went on a 2,000 mile trip and it worked fine. I haven't towed yet with my new SD 4X4 V-10, so I want to be sure nothing's cookin' along those wires!!

I'll have to wait until I get home next week. I'm in Utah again but not in a Ford Truck....(Okay, it's a rice burner, but a darn nice one!! Accord EX).

The cable I purchased has a wrap around it as any other harness would. I wonder if the fuse is sealed under that in line from the factory??

I do remember the salesman during my new vehicle orientation session telling me that all I had to do was plug in the controller. I'll call him and ask them if they installed that stuff during intitial preparation prior to putting it out on the sales lot.

Yeah, I think they come that way. I e-mailed my uncle who worked at the Ford assembly plant and he says Ford has been doing this for many years. His '93 came with everything installed. Just plug n' play, so to speak.

Like I said, this is my third (not second) factory towing package. My '97 came the same way, just plug on the harness and the contoller.

I just purchased a 2003 F250 and it still had the pigtail in the glovebox, minus the fuses and directions. I found the connection under the dash as described above and wired my Prodigy box as detailed. Pulled my horses today and all worked as promised! I did find that my trailer had been wired differently and had to switch a couple of leads. The trailer sales dept. had wired my last truck to fit the trailor...a 5 min. fix.

I suspect you did not get a class III towing package if that part was missing.

I bought the truck from another guy. Evidently the relays for the t/t package are not in the main pwr. dist.
