Federal Warranty on EEC-IV components

I have a 1997 Explorer w/ V6 SOHC and 73000 miles. The check engine light has recently come on. Dealer has told me the OBD-II codes are:

P0171: System Adaptive fuel too lean (Bank 1), and
P0174: System Adaptive fuel too lean (Bank 2).

I have two questions:

1. Is there a federal warranty on the Electronic Engine Control (EEC) components - and does my vehicle qualify for the warranty?

2. Any recommendations regarding the best approach for further diagnosing and fixing this problem? The servicemen at the dealership do not seem terribly competent.

Thanks,
Ben

In my '97 Warranty Information Booklet the only things covered past 3/36K are the catalytic converter and the PCM. They are covered for 8/80K. The two codes you got though (P0171 & P0174) are the same two codes I got when my lower intake manifold o-rings started leaking. Those are covered for 6 years 72K through Owner Notification Program 00M12. Up until April 30 of this year there was no mileage limit. You can verify if the o-rings are leaking by spraying propane in around the lower intake manifold while monitoring your short term fuel trims with an OBD-II scanner. Any sudden change when the propane is present indicaes an air leak into the manifold. Ask your dealer to pull up ONP-00M12 and refer to TSB Article No. 99-10-4 for more information on troubleshooting it. Since you are so close to the mileage limit your dealership should be willing to work with you on the price. If not expect to pay about $300-$400.

LAST EDITED ON 04-Oct-01 AT 01:34 AM (EST)[p]Sounds like a dirty Mass Airflow Sensor to me. It's nearly as common as the leaking intake gaskets described above. Check 'em both & let us know what you find.
