how do i pump up the lifters?

I have quick question about when i get ready torque down the rocker arms on my 77 D7OE heads on an 83 grand marquis 302 block. in the past pack rat and i have had the same question about these heads and i know i am just supposed to torque them down to 23 ft lbs but in packrats post someone said to have the lifters pumped up when you torque them down and i am wondering just how to pump them up. Are you just talking about using a drill to turn the oil pump to get oil up to them like priming the engine before you start it or what? hopefully the engine will be going in next week!! thanks for all the help!!!

Yes, just find someway to turn the oil pump, just build a little pressure for a couple of rotations. I used to take the coil wire off and crank it for a couple of seconds, but if your engine is not running, then a drill is your option, besides cranking a V8 by hand... that's not fun.

Good Luck.

Soak them in motor oil over night. The lifters pump themselves up.

Not trying to insult your knowledge, but you do know each rocker has to be on the base cirle of the cam (valve closed) before you torque, right? Also, you should reach torque spec at 1/2 to 3/4 turns past zero lash.

Another way to fill the lifters is to place all of them in a coffee can and fill the can with motor oil to a point above the top of the lifters. Place the can on your drill press and place an old piece of pushrod into the chuck. Just use the leverage of the drill press to press down on each lifter. It will quickly fill each lifter with oil. I have done this many times.
