I get an average of 18-20 mpg and up to 25 mpg goin 75 mph w/ cruise control and 14 or 16 mpg when pulling a 5000 lb trailer. I drove about about 300 miles on a 29 gallon tank and still had a little under a 1/4 left.

I just came back from a short trip of 125 miles and filled up before I got on the highway and toped the tank off as much as it would take. the tank now reads just about half that really is bad, I am bringing the truck to the dealer first thing tomorrow morning. I checked the oil for fuel and its not over filled, I cant understand whats going on and I was not driving in the mountains either. The highway was pretty flat, could it be the fuel.
My dad used to be hyper obsessed with gas mileage and his driving techniques to obtain the highest mileage. He would rev the motor just so in each gear and then shift, he'd also throw it in neutral going down hills and so on. He would very carefully top off the tank the same each time and record the mileage and do the calc.
If my brother or I drove the car (a 1975 Honda CVCC Civic) he would come to the gas station with us and fill up the car and then gleefully tell us that we must not be driving just right because he beat us by a mpg or two. He should of course have been more carefully monitoring tire tread depth as we weren't really all that concerned about gas mileage ;-)
So, we conspired to start adding a bit of gas here and there when we were driving the car, and siphoning out a bit when he drove it. Pretty soon our mileage was better than his and his had dropped off a bit. He was pulling his hair out for a while trying to figure out what was going on until we broke down and told him.
We all had a good laugh.

lol, that is funny daryl.
a while back someone posted that the 6.0 makes more hp than the old 7.3 and that is part of the reason of the poor milege. i agree with what he said but ford said milege would go up with the new engine, cant remember exactly what percent though.

ASE, I am in the same boat as you. 300-350 miles to a tank. 210 pulling a 7500# 5th wheel. Not good. If I could afford it I would trade my 04, 6.0 for a 7.3 hands down. Ford is never gonna live this down. A 7.3 with a Torqueshift would be AWESOME.
u need to get more miles on the odo.when my truck was new it got around the same mileage.i have 20k on it now and it gets about 18 hwy miles unloaded and 14hwy miles towing a 22ft enclosed trailer. It will get better trust me..

These are two very different motors, what is calculated MPG, what conditions what wind….what …..what...there are so many factors that will effect it.
Take a look at this thread.
How you start out from a stop sign with that load will change your overall as much as 1.1 to 2.4 again depending on how many times you do it for one tank.
I could get as high as 12.1 with my load.......if I TRIED. http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=265910

southernfordman - if you do the math and add back 1/4 of the 29 gal tank which you report remaining, then 300 divided by 21.75 = 13.82 mpg. I have an article put out by Ford dated Oct 7, 2002 which states (about the 6.0) in part "improved fuel economy by approximately 8%" - that would be over the 7.3. I feel cheated but still ordered another one so why should they care?
I average 19.1 hwy miles consistantly. I think some of the promblem is that the tanks are notriously hard to refill to the same spot to accurately check your mileage. Plus, anything over 65 to 70 hurts mileage. Mine has a sweet spot that it gets the best mileage. Any extended idling kills my mileage also. This is after 20000 miles of checking. JMO
