This **** truck...glow plugs out AGAIN!!!

This truck is starting to **** me off.

This was supposed to be good, reliable winter transportation. I figured I was in good shape since it doesn't even have 100K on it.

But it seems like I have more nagging problems with this thing than I did with my old POS tempo.

2-3 weeks ago I fixed a shorted out glow plug I had. The GP's worked fine again, I was happy, as I didn't have to plug it in everywhere.

Well this afternoon I went out and got in the truck, I had been at my girlfriend's place and didn't have it plugged in. Turned the key, and the wait to start light came on for about 5 seconds.

NOW WTF is wrong? I see no evidence of any shorted glow plugs this time...am I going to have to assume one has just died???

im not sure waht to tell you on your problem, but why wont anyone elses motor crank without glow plugs? mine will crank completely cold at 20 degrees without glowplugs in about 10 seconds? but maybe its a 7.3 thing cause my dads 7.3 has to have glow plugs but even then its hard to crank

20 degrees outside, crank for 10 seconds and starts without glowplugs? I think you are a little mixed up somewhere. I haven't seen it all, but I have been around a lot of dump trucks, skid steers, military trucks, pickups, small tractors, all diesels, and all will not hit a lick unless they have help from some sort of starting aid in 20 degree weather.

My 6.9L won't start in 90* weather without being plugged in OR using the glowplugs.
My '94's glow plugs have always worked so I don't know about it.
My PowerStroke won't start in "cool" weather w/o glow plugs.

My Cummins will start in pretty cold weather without the grid heater.

i guess its just all in how well of shape the things are in, my dads 7.3 is about like your 6.9 maybe not that bad, but it dont like to crank if its 40 degrees, but mine cranks fine, if we ever find my moms video camera then i will record my truck crankin with and with out glowplugs and put it on you tube, i have sound clips on my cell phone if any one has a cell phone lol

I have a 560 International with a 358 Diesel that I put in it and it will start as low as 10*F without any type of glow plug or heater (it doesn't even have any heaters or glow plugs in it), it may start even lower but I have not tried it. It is Direct Injection though and it has the same injection pump that is on the first gen cummins dodge trucks, the VE Bosch. I have never heard of any of the IDI motors or the early model IH diesel tractor engines that will start without glow plugs. Maybe you got beyond lucky somehow.

I like to change them in sets. If a couple fail, there is a good chance that the rest of them may not be far behind. Retest them all.

My 7.3 might start without the glowplugs if I gave it enough revolutions. But I've never given it the chance. It's too hard on the starter. I've never seen any IDI start without them dead cold on 2-3 revs, whether it was 20 deg or 120 deg.

i didnt say 2-3 turns without the plugs, i said 2-3 with the plugs- 10-12 turns without the plugs, its ok if you dont belive me, it was hard to belive at first until it set one hole week and wasnt cranked and i went out side with it around 30 degrees and let them heat and she fired within 3-4 turns.

Sorry, I had your 2 posts running together. Should have reread what you posted. That sounds about right. Mine will start pretty easily most of the time whether it has sat a day or a month.
