Domestic content of Ford vs. Chevy, Dodge, Toyota, and Nissan

Does anybody know the domestic content of Ford versus Chevy, Dodge, Toyota, or Nissan (i.e. electronics, steel, transmissions, engines, etc) ? Just how American are our American trucks? For example, I know that Ford has used transmissions from Mitsubishi and Mazda in the past on Explorers. Now I understand Ford's relationship with Mazda, but I can't stand Mitsubishi and sure don't want one of their transmissions in my Ford truck!

At one point in time the window sticker had a percentage break down. At least when I was vehicle shopping in Colorado back in high school. If I remember right the big three were all pretty equal in percentage made in America. Since the Mazda tranny disaster that Ford had years ago most have been supplied by ZF (manuals anyways).

The new Cab over ford trucks with the V6 baby Power Stroke coming out shortly are made 100% in Mexico. Won't be going near one of those any time soon.

Actually, the mexico made products hold up better, case in point, go down there and look at how many old cars and trucks are still on the road. I'm not talking about bodies here I'm talking about mechanically sound..... You would be very surprised to know that most of our so called american made cars and truck are only assembled in america. Why do you think there are so many metric bolts in everything from the early eighties on... Mitsubishi was owned by Chrysler, they bought it back when iakoka (sp?) still ran ford. He bailed out chrysler in the early 80s when thay were goin bankrupt. They later were able to buy back the portion of the company that ford bought, only to sell out again to daimler-benz in the '90s. Thus giving us one of the biggest car manufacturers in the world, Daimler-Chrysler, makers of damned near everything that comes out of germany, italy, and a few other places too.... Ford owns Volvo, and most of the brittish companies, while DC now owne Renault.

Just curious, what transmission was made by Mitsubishi and fitted in a Ford? And what vehicle was it fitted to?

I don't buy Mexican products being of better quality or lasting longer. I try to buy American when ever possible. Even if my truck wasn't made from "all" American parts at least an American worker put those parts together, and an American driver delivered it to the dealer, where an American sold it to me.

According to the Haynes manual I have for Ford Explorer 91-01, a 5 speed manual Mitsubishi transmission was fitted to the Explorer. Now perhaps the book is wrong, but I am sure glad I have the automatic in my truck. Of course I've also seen on my truck many parts stamped or otherwise identified made somewhere else besides U.S.A. With so many jobs going to foreign labor, I think its time to demand that these jobs come back home!

I looked at an '04 F-150 the other day, it had a sticker in the window saying the foreign/domestic parts percentage. The F-150 is 85% American parts. The engine is listed as Canadian, the transmission is American, and the electrical is from Japan (supposedly where quality comes from). I guess you could say its multi-cultural???

Any Dodge or Chevy owners care to add to this discussion? Surely you guys must have a comment on the domestic content of your trucks.

I thought they used Mazda transmissions? "I thought", that would be putting faith in my bad memory.

Domestic Content

If I remember correctly the "domestic" content was actual North America content. This allowed the big three to count the content from Canada and Mexico as domestic. This was really a numbers game aimed at the cars coming out of the Honda plant in Ohio, the Toyota plant in Kentucky, and the Nissan plant in Tennesse.

They may have used Mazda transmission back in the day, but I had a 91 4 cylinder 2wd that had the Mitsubishi tranny. I just thought that most of them had it, but I'm not for sure.
