69 f100 man to autl tranny
hi all, i have a 69 f100, 300 inline6 with the farmer 4.i want to change it to an automatic, because the clutch goes every 15 months, and i do a fair bit of highway miles, and she screams at 70.
if i went with the c-6 and a large cooler, what else would i need, how would i do the kickdown, and has anyone done this before.
thanks all

i just got thru doing this about 2 months ago. one thing before we start, changing the tranny to an c6 will not help you on the highway. both trannys have a high gear of 1-1, or direct drive. you might actually have a little more scream with the auto since c6s and anyhting besides an o d do not ever completely lock the torque. there is always some slippage in an automatic because of the way they are designed.
now then, it is a pretty straight forward swap. you will need a tranny out of a pickup or van. or the shift shaft out of a pickup or van to put in a car tranny. you will need a flexplate, the spacer plate between the motor and bellhousing for the tranny, a radiator with the tranny cooler in the tank, and the driveshaft .
if the crossmember between the radius arm brackets does not unbolt, you will either have to cut the rivets out, or pull the engine and put the engine and tranny together outside the truck and put it back in as one unit.
like i said, it is a straight forward swap. you just need all the parts before you start.

any idea what tranny would be better?
i can get a c6 for just about $300, and he'll give me $200 for my old tranny.i would rather have something with overdrive though.
the reason i'm doing this now is my ring gear only has 11 teeth on it, and i'm tired of pushing my truck to start it.
thanks

unless you do a lot of heavy pulling or hotrodding, i would just replace the third member with a higher geared one. then either replace the ring gear or go ahead and swap the tranny out for an auto. i only use the c 6 in trucks, but most of the 6 trucks came with a c 4. i have a tranny out of one right now, c 4 with a bolt on yoke on the rear.
