BW 1356 for 2WD Low Range?

Just wonderin' if the BW 1356 can be modified to be used in a 2wd truck for creeper gears? I want to disable the front drive and use the 2-Hi, Neutral, and 4Lo ranges. I also hear that the 1356 has a PTO attachment point, is that correct? If so, can I run a PTO driven winch off it? The reason I'm asking is that I have access to an M5OD from a local Trans shop with a lifetime guarantee for a 4x4 application, but would like to have access to a few creeper gears as well. Is this possible?

Not sure what your asking but, how about some information on your truck? The BW1356 is a transfercase for a 4x4. Maybe you can pull the chain out of the case, not sure on that, why not just leave it like it is and not have anything connectedto the front output effectivly giving you 2hi and 2 lo?

If you're changing the trans anyways, why not change to the ZF 5-speed. It has a 5.72 Low first gear and OD fifth, can be started in second gear for most normal driving, like the old 'granny' 4-speeds.

The 4x4 t-case idea also seems like a feasible one. I dont know the details about the PTO but it does have it. A ZF + t-case Low gear would give you a compound low gear of nearly 12:1

is right! However, the reason lies in the good deal on a tranny at the shop I deal with. He's a reputable guy I've been doing business with for several years, and I'll get a lifetime warranty on the trans (he has a reputation in these parts for "bulletproofing" transmissions that are generally considered uh.. weak). The T-case was my idea, since the trans is for a 4x4, I figured that I'd make use of what's available. That, with a Centerforce 11" clutch, and I'll be ok. Besides, I could never harness the torque that a 12:1 creeper ratio would give me with 2WD!

David, Why would you need to modify it to get it to work? The only way to get the front end to work is to have a driveshaft hooked to it. Driveshafts are connected from different sides of the transfer case.

I don't know about the pto, but with the transfer case in line the answer to your original question should be yes.

I don't think there is much you can do to make the mazda bulletproof.... it's a weak trans under hard use.
