Looking for XLT Trim for Tailgate for a 70F250

Anyone happen to know where I can find the XLT trim for a 70 F250 tailgate or the Whole Tailgate, I have seen some early trucks like ours that had all the stainless steel on the back...it really look sharp!! Sean, doesnt your tailgate have all the stainless trim on it??

The XLT had what I think is a wood grain type of tailgate panel.

Dennis Carpenter sells either type. Sometimes on ebay a whole tailgate, with trim, will be listed.

Dot, it must have been a later year tailgate on the one's I saw? Because I could have sworn the center of the gate was all stainless and on the lower right corner it had FORD..it was stainless trimmed with stainless.it really set the truck off....Russ

Russ, I'm not up on all the variations, but that sort of sounds like the 1980 & up trucks. Might be a higher end 73-79 that had something like that, I'm not sure. Maybe someone in a different year forum can help you out.

Here is a link for a 67-72 tailgate on ebay, but shipping might be expensive. It would take some work as well, but looks fairly decent.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...&category=6763

Not sure how easy it would be to attach a different year trim panel. Might ask over in the body and paint forum.

my truck has the trim you are talking about. I used to think it was suposed to be silver but then I found out from the prev. owner that the wood grain laminate that ford put on had just faded and peeled off. I like it better this way anyway

yea you can clean em' up pretty good too. I used a random orbital sander to polish them up some then had them clear anodized.

Thanks Dot, for sending that to me, But after looking real close, it looks in shabby shape? My truck isnt show, but all the trim I have kept staight for 30 + years..I might have to go thru Mac's or something like that, and get repro?
Thanks, Russ

The '70-'72 Rangers had the plain (shiny) filler panel that makes the tailgate look flat, the XLT's had the deluxe one with the woodgrain.

My 1972 Explorer special had the one that looks simular to the woodgrain one, except it was stainless steel, and instead of the added on letters, like the ones on the hood, it had bigger letters painted black, indented into the trim piece. It covers the whole tailgate from handle to bottom of the gate. Held on with screws on the backside.

Dennis Carpenter has a pretty big selection of parts. You might send off for a catalog.

Seems I was wrong on the tailgate panels. I have a 70 Brochure, but I don't think it covers the Ranger or Explorer models.
