Future 4.6L V8 owner

Sorry to bother you regulars here in the 4.6/5.4 forum but I am soon going to be getting rid of my 2001 4.2L V6 4x4 for a 4.6L V8.

Are there any engine problems I should be aware of on the 1998 model 4.6L 4x4.

Here is the specific one I am looking at if it interests you guys..

Looks pretty clean. The only major drawback is that the 98 didn't have PI heads so it doesn't have as much power as the 99-up. How many miles are on it?

No idea on any other things on it besides what shows on the webpage so that sucks. I am going to be calling the dealership tomorrow though. And another drawback is that this dealership is more than 250 miles away from where I live.

I'll let you know the details tomorrow.

Could I get some more information on what PI heads are? and how much power is not there? Sorry im just not an engine junkie

This motor does not have the pi heads, but that doesn't mean that it isn't built like a tank.

If you change the oil regularly the motor will run forever.

Check the transmission fluid for proper color, and proper smell. If it looks dark or smells burnt I would stay away.

The transmission fluid in these trucks needs to be changed every 25k miles with merconV and a new filter.

Other than that I would just inspect the tailgate bottom for rust, and the bottom of the doors and rocker panels.

The PI heads have a larger, redesigned intake port and are designed to swirl the air/fuel mixture better in the cylinders. The HP went up 35 in 99. The intake manifold was also redesigned to match the heads. I believe the cams have a different profile as well.

If you could get it for 6500 or less, I'd go for it. Even if you put an engine in it later, you will still have a nice truck for under $10,000.

hey thanks alot lxman1...

You really think having a 161K engine is worth hving to worry about constant repair??
How long do these 4.6 bad boys usually last if they are treated "nice" haha....
Because If i get that truck it will be getting a lift, tires, offroadin rims....good thing to do in indiana.

you think it will last long with that kind of mods on it?

It would probably last awhile. I personally suggest the 5.4L if you plan on running taller tires and such. They have a lot more torque and will pull the weight better. That's my personal opinion, though.

Yea I agree with you too....My dad has a 1999 F-250 Superduty 5.4L and it gets like 10-12 mpg so I'm not so sure about that. My 01 4.2L f150 gets 18 or so mpg and I love that part of my truck, I just want something that I cant put the lift and tires on and still have lotsa extra power leftover...

My F150 gets about 14 around town. The SuperDUty trucks have a looser torque converter and usually 3.73 or lower gears. My SuperCab 4x4 gets about 14mpg with 5.4L,4R70W tranny, on the fly 4x4, 3.55LS gears and 265/70R17 tires.
Plus the SD is heavier than the F150's.
