Changing Y pipe and having an instant V6

Has anyone changedthe restricted y pipe and have the V10 sound really silly. More like a V6 or even a ricer 4 cyl? I put the banks power pack on this and I hate the sound....I liked it at first but is really sounds stupid. All the sound clips I heard the V10's really scream.....The headers wouldn't make it sound like that.....the Muffler..I dont know. The y pipe...maybe....Iam thinking of changing the banks dynaflow to a flowmaster. I hope it will work....but I am wondering if those restrictions in the y pipe were there for a reason. Any thoughts on this.....My big tough superduty sound like crap.

We will have to live with the different sound the 72 degree firing order gives us.The only stock exhaust components i have is 2- 12" pcs of pipe with the o2 sensors.I have a deep sound at low rpms, but quickly shreiks.I have learned to love the sound.Changing the y-pipe might have some effect on sound, but the V10 sound will still be there. Its the nature of our 10 cyl engine.

I understand that.....but some FM40 with just a muffler swap sound better, much more aggressive.

Maybe the best sound would come from true-dual exhaust without a crossover pipe and outlets coming out on opposite sides of the truck?

That way you'd have 144 degrees between firings on each pipe.

Then you'd sound like two straight-5's ...

Otherwise, if that didn't work, it would have to be the valve-timing making it sound so weird.

Think about it this way: The little ricers are using some amazing technology to squeeze out the last little bit of power. They "sound" hi-tech. The V10 at 415 cubes puts out more net torque stock than my vintage-60's FE 390 with 11:1, 4bbl, 292/292 cam, headers etc GROSS! And the V10 puts out 80% of that torque at 1000RPM's. I don't mind sounding hi-tech (or at least, that's my rationalization)

Try a flowmaster 40 series with a 4 inch exit to a 5 inch tip, It sounds as close to the V-8 as your ever gonna get.

I would sure like to hear some sound clips of that Banks. Banks is what I plan on getting and want to hear before I buy.

Keep in mind Banks is trying to sell a product to satisfy many different consumers. Each one has a different idea on what sounds good. I like my Borla(quiet, maybe a hair louder than stock) Been there done that with loud exhausts... I'd rather have the power over the noise. Some people associate loudness with power. Not necessarily true. Does more people in a theater make the movie funnier? Moans and groans during sex make it better? You get the idea...

I installed the borla hdrs/catbak and am pleased with the sound. Not too loud but deeper. It does NOT sould like a V8 though, and I never expected it too.

I had a 50 series put on my 99 V10 crew cab while it was in the shop getting repaired after getting rear ended. The 50 series is a nice mellow tone at idle but quickly turns into a freakin indy car at higher RPM's. I love the sound, some people don't it's all personal preference.

I can say however I listened to the banks kit before deciding to go FM50 with a 4" pipe. The banks kit sounded very, "TINNY" if that's a word. Not a deep tone at all in my opinion. I saved the $2500 and but the flowmaster in. I may not have gotten any power out of it (Which is hard to tell since it's been so long since I have driven the truck) but i like the sound. I will try and get a sound bite at lunch today.

FWIW,I've got the Banks setup from the heads to the tailpipe tip and am satisfied with the sound. If you are looking for V-8 sound I suggest the 5.4,just don't be sore when I pass your "donkey".The 10 will never sound like a V-8.
If you don't like the way a Ford V-10 sounds,I suggest you listen too a Dodge V-10,(a six cylinder times two).It may help your opinion.
