Diagnostic Error Code Help
A friend of mine has an EASE diagnostic tool to check error codes on a vehicle. My Mountaineer had the codes listed below. My question is how difficult, and the location of each problem, would it be to fix the issues myself?
DTC Code: P0402 EGR Flow excessive
DTC Code: P1116 ECT sensor out of self test range
DTC Code: P1127 Exhaust cool HO2S2 not tested?
DTC Code: P1780 E4OD Transmission controls SW Fail?
Sorry to have so many issues in one post, just hoping I can fix these myself.
Any and all help appreciated….

87 XLT,
We cleared the codes, and as always the little friend came back on (Check Engine Light). We are going to run it hard tomorrow and re-scan the computer.
The only other thing that's noticed is that around 30 MPH it feels like it's stuck between gears. It just kind of just pulses. Wondering if the throttle body is not binding?
Thanks, will post the findings.

Sounds like a plan to me. I'm very glad to say that i've never owned a car or truck with an automatic transmission, so I dont know much about the idiot things, but that P1780 probably explains your shifting problem. The transmission control switch monitors the positon of your gear shift lever & tells the trans which gear it should be in. If you get the P1780 again the switch or its wiring is bad. Dont have a wiring diagram for yours, but I think the switch is under the hood.

87 XLT,
Yes.... After a warm run I have the following two codes.
DTC P1780 E40D Transmission Control SW Fail
DTC P0402 EGR Flow Excessive
Would you have any idea who might know the location of the Transmission Control switch? Also, is the EGR Flow Excessive a sign of a faulty EGR, or something else?
Appriciate the help.

OOPS, I just took a look at the wiring diagram for a 97 Explorer (closest I have to yours) and the transmission control switch on the Ex doesnt work like I thought. Heres what it sez "A momentary contact switch that signals the PCM to allow automatic shifts from 1st thru 4th or 1st thru 3rd gears."
It's just an on/off switch with 2 wires attached. Yours might be different but on the 97 Explorer this switch is under the dash near the interior fuse panel.
Thats a great idea to get some manuals for your truck. I have the "electrical & vaccum troubleshooting manuals" (EVTM) for both of my Fords & they have saved me a LOT of time/aggrivation and money with the electrical problems that I have had to fix. Sometimes you can figure out which component in a circuit isnt doing what it should by simply looking at the wiring diagram. Check out the EVTM for your Ranger at www.helminc.com As far as this PITA transmission switch, what I would do is buy one so you know what you are looking for & then try to find it under the dash. Good luck with it.
