rear axle swap question

My Dad has a '94 2.3L ranger extended cab that is very weak. Im considering swapping the rear end out for one that has lower gears, to get a little more torque to the ground. What model years will bolt up with no hassles, and how can I tell what the gear ratio is, are there any markings, other than turning it by hand and counting wheel rotations. The intake has already been modified, and Im about to open up the exhaust, but I know those mods are not going to give me enough. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

The vehicle certification label is located on the left door pillar. The axle code is located below the bar code. You should have a 7.5" rear. Base gears are 3.45.
