Classic truck comparison

I want to see what the overall opinion is on the older trucks, let's say from 1967-1990. Nothing in this discussion newer than 1990 please.

Ford F-100/F-150 vs. Chevy C-10/GMC-15 vs. Dodge D-100 vs. International Harvester 1100D vs. Jeep J-10 Pickup

Well until you are into the 50's there is not much to talk about but i will say something anyway.

In a 4X4 or 4x2 77-79 I think are the best looking and most reliable trucks out there. These things are indestuctable.

As for a truck to rod I like the early 70's chev's 4x2. Very cool with the pro street look. Of course it would have a ford BB, C6 and 9-inch rearend.

In reality though my 56 panel well better than any of the years you mentioned though it is close with the 77-79 fords.

dad had a 67 chevy half ton, i thought the wood slat bed was real cool. but from 72 on i prefer the looks of the ford products, seems like the gm engines from that era were always greasy, they had a nice big six back then, but there wasnt any retainer on the rod bearings to keep them them from turning in the cap, dad went through 2 motors because of spun rod bearings. when we got the '74 F250 with the 300, it was such a clean motor! i like the '76-'77 front end the best.

What I was intending in writing this thread is to compare the "Big 3" 's trucks of yesteryear to the "other" competition, the International Harvester and Jeep pickups.

I used to have a 74 F100 and I beat it to a pulp and it still kept running. I liked the size that it had and the fact that the single cab was big enough in size to not look silly with an 8 foot bed. The 390 FE was tons of fun, too.

My dad had an International Scout that could take anything thrown at it. In the winter in Sierras, the rear driveshaft snapped, and it was still able to drive home. I guess that made it the original front wheel driver.

For a real man's truck I could beat up all day and not worry about...a 1980-82 F-150. Gimme a 351C and 4 wheel drive and let's go huntin'!

We had a '78 Scout II for while with the V8, it was alright, nothing special. I preferred the '79 Jeep CJ with 258 six/4speed and the '76 GMC Jimmy 350/TH350 we had to the Scout. I prefer my '69 Bronco 302/3speed to all of them though .

We never had a Ford pickup untill I got my '92 F350. I like it alot. We did have a '73 Chevy C20 454/TH400, and I had a '77 Chevy K20 350/TH350, an '82 GMC dually 454/TH400 and a Dodge D150 318/727. All of them were good trucks .

I always wanted a jeep J truck with a 401 engine, or a 78-79 f-series. I do really like the AMC V8's though, the 304 I had in my 78 Jeep cj7 was great.

There's a '78 J-10 listed in the local paper for $450, but I know its a little far to travel from PA to NC.

Let's hear some more stuff on the "off brands".

I've got a 66 D-100 225CI SLANT 6. Very straight body with badly faded factory original paint. (red) Only had it the last 22years or so, and was my dailey drive for most of the 80's. Can't kill this thing. It's got around 250,000mi. Still use it on occation to this day. It,s styling is so ugly-it's beautiful.

I like the styling of the old Jeep pickups, and almost bought one once, but I worried about parts availability, specifically body panels. They get rusty up here.

I have two International Scouts, one a 1972 and a 1977. I have always loved IH and there long lasting engines. I also like the looks of the 60's trucks. My father has a 1974 F-100 and its not too bad, its a beast to drive! 390 power!
