94 ranger wil not start when hot - intermittantly

wolfen, bhughes7725,

i have same prob - 94, 4cyl, 5spd, 2wdr XLT, 97k miles. truck runs great except for once i a while, especiallly in very hot weather. then after a trip (long or short), truck may not start. turns over & seems like starving for fuel (It's trying to kick, but just won't catch). I have opened gas cap - no vapor lock. If i try to start repeatedly, it's unstartable for several hours; If i leave it alone & open hood, it'll start within 5 minutes. I tried wiggling all connectors, thinking it's some ozidation that worsens in heat. no good. lately the check engine light comes on occassionally while driving then goes off within a few minutes. this seems not to coincide with the starting problem. no other symptoms. gas mileage is normal.

Please explain how i can retreive computer codes - i don't want to goto a dealership - they just tell me there's nothing they can do unless it's exibiting the problem, which, of course, i can't predict. Do all Autozone stores perfom this service??

another post mentioned a stuck EFI relay, and of course, various sensors. I would think if i have a hard sensor failure, that the problem would either always be there or that most sensors wouldn't stop the car from starting.

thanks for any help ! nick

Before you get carried away, when it doesn't start try tapping on the fuel pump relay a couple of times then try to start it.Under the hood, looking at it from the front, its the second one back on the left in the fuse box.its 1 in.x 1 in. square block.when they get hot sometimes they stick.it never hurts to replace it anyway, they are only $10.

94 ranger will not start when engine is hot

well, R & R-ed the fuel pump relay & found the A/C relay to be missing, so i replaced that also. A few days have gone by & so far so good - truck's been running fine. hopefully this fixed the no start issue!!

i also realize why the A/C relay was removed - seems that any appreciable amount of throttle turns off the A/C compressor & the cab is noticibly not as cold in stop & go driving. highway driving, you don't notice any difference. I assume that the compressor drops the already screaming 2 gerbal power of this engine to 1, so that's why the previous owner removed it !! (really is a great little truck other than should never have been sold with a normally aspirated 4 cylinder!!)

thanks to all for the help !

Your A/C problem may be the Air charge sensor or the A/C compresser clutch switch,or it may just need a can of freon.Glad you got it starting.Pull the codes anyway,Auto-zone will read them for free.you may have a pending code that will locate the problem.Have a pen ready to write them down then post here.

New User.... I also have a 94 3.0V-6 with Automatic trans that has trouble starting when hot. This problem has persisted for the past two years but only when it is hot outside (june-Sept). I have replaced a pile of parts trying to figure out this problem and can not get the truck to replicate this problem at the dealership to get a computer read. Looks like I will try the fuel pump relay today and cross my fingers. SCARDNI, let me know if this problem is fixed with your Ranger.....Any advise would be appreciated...
