Is 30w or 20w50 thicker?

Question Is 30w or 20w50 thicker?

Which is thicker straight 30 or 20w50?

20w50 will be thinner when it is cold but at a 100 degrees it will be thicker than a 30 wieght.

As c_rossman pointed out, 20W-50 is both. It depends on temperature, and the condition of the VI improver.

For example,

Chevron Supreme 20W-50 / 30

Viscosity, Kinematic
cSt at 40C = 175 / 101
cSt at 100C = 18.8 / 11.5

Pour Point = -21C / -18C
