Getting to the Spare on a 99 Ranger
New to the site…so far I have found it VERY useful…thanks

My Question

I just bought a used 99 ranger xlt and it did not have a jack or whatever it takes to get to the spare tire. I can obviously buy an aftermarket jack but how do I get to the spare? I found a thread that discussed a lock over the spare tire mechanism just under the tailgate but I don’t seem to have a lock on mine…it just looks like a small opening that I could put a long tool into? I assume its some sort of crank, what am I looking for here?

Buy a jack at a junk yard. Make sure you get one from a 4x4 if your vehicle is a 4x4. The jack on a 2 door super cab is located in the passenger side rear storage compartment. Regular cab jacks are behind the passenger seat. Super cab 4 door jacks are on the back panel between the seats. The jack will come with a lug wrench and 3-4 small sections of a crank that go together and work the jack. The crank also goes into the hole below the tail gate to crank up and down the spare tire. If you did not get an owners manual to look up the jack/spare tire info, pick up a manual also at a junk yard or on e-bay.

The hole is where the lock goes, but obviously you dont have one. But any long tool with a flat end should be able to lower the tire. It is on a kinda winch that has a cable that holds the tire in place.
PS any jack will do (but i dont recomend a bumper jack) but getting to the spare should be (and i guess it is by your post) your primary concern.
good luck
