The way this system works is the pressure from the low pressure pump that is turned on by the switch on the dash cause the selector valve to move to the tank whos low pressure pump is running. When the slector starts doing what yours is doing there is no fix accept to replace the selector. it is fairly simple to bypass the selector valve. I took 2 fuel filters and cut the quick connect ends off and brazed them onto 2 pieces of steel tubing long enough to bridge the gap between the selector and the fuel line going to the high pressure pump and the return line. I used discarded fuel filters for my donors

That's another good idea but don't forget the size of fuel line fitting aren't the same for pressure and return lines.

I found the electric fuel pump! Its between the fuel filter and selector valve. Does that mean that i can try to bi- pass the selector valve? The parts store said to use hose clamps and brass fittings. What's the best way to repair fuel lines? What should i use to fix a leaking fuel tank?

this truck originally came with 2 wheel drive. I bought it on Jan 10 2004. Few months later I convert to 4x4.

Wtroger , I disconnected my fuel lines a my front fuel pump and the fuel is coming out of the return line. Are the return lines 3/8"? I think my fuel filter ends are 5/16". How did you find a second fuel filter with 3/8" ends? The return line has a push-connect fitting at the fuel pump. Do you think i should bi-pass the selector valve or block off the fuel lines at the fuel pump. I was wounder how long before my selector valve stops working completly. Thanks guys

Just a thought, but a front tank, steel, 19Gal is only $98 at Advance auto. The selector valve is available thru Ford for around $130

Possibly Safety Recall 93S68

Ford calls the problem "fuel cross-flow" and there was safety recall 93S68 dated late 1993 that addressed that problem on my 1990 F350. I just checked my truck records to verify numbers. Ford extended warranty on mine for 150k miles or 12 years. Problem was in the fuel pump/sender assembly.

That's a totally different recall! That's not related to Mike L's problem.

I need to cut off a 1/2" harden steel bolt, to replace a brocken leaf spring. All I have is a Sawzall. Whats a good brand for a saw blade? I used up a Milwaukee steel blade 14 teeth per inch in about 15 minutes. Is that normal?

TSB / recall 91s39 <<< I'm guessing on this since I can't access to alldata at this moment.
Kwikford I looked up all the years for recalls on the selector valve and the only year i found was for 1989, 91s39 issued in 1991. The only difference was it was for a 4X4, mine is a 2X4. Is the fuel system on a 1987 F150 4.9 2X2 the same as a 1989 f150 4.9 4X4? The selector valve pic above is the same as mine. Also can this recall only be good under a 3 year warranty, thats what ford told me today.
