Acetone to boost MPG?
I saw a link in one of the other forums to a website that claims adding acetone to your gas tank will help boost MPG. This doesnt really sound like a good idea to me but Im still a greenhorn around cars. Is it just me or does this sound like a bad idea?
anyone every tried it before?

2. One ounce of acetone added to ten gallons of diesel fuel will reduce soot and improve fuel mileage an average of 22-percent. You will also notice a slight gain in performance.
3. Three or four ounces of acetone added to 10 gallons of gasoline will increase mileage about 25-percent. Your MPG will increase and performance too. You can expect the engine to last longer. A recent trip to Washington DC in a normal 1995 Neon gave us 49 MPG with the air conditioner on. However when alcohol was present in the gasoline, the mileage dropped as low as 25 MPG. Texaco gasoline consistently produced nearly 50 MPG, with a little acetone thrown into the tank. Use a long funnel to avoid paint damage using acetone.

You really should have used the search function. The first post listed had 100+ replies, and linked to the same lubedev site you provided. Hope this helps https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...light=acetone+

I've never heard of acetone improving mileage, but for cars that are having problems passing emissions (HC) it sure can help. Acetone, about one pint in five gallons, warms the converter up a bit more . After the test, promptly dilute it by filling and running it to empty before the next fill.
