I have an '83 F150 4.9, and am going to change the carburetor myself. I've never done it, I don't have any "special" tools such as a torque wrench etc.. I was told it will have to be "set up". I've done alot of work on her changed fuel pumps,water pumps, and small things, is this going to be way out of my league?

Remember I'm not a gearhead, or a horsepower buff.

Which carb are you putting on? The actual swap itself is pretty straightforeward. Just be careful tightening the carb flange onto the manifold. Go around in a pattern like you would for lug nuts when changing a tire and only tighten a little bit at a time. They need to be tight enough to seal well, that's all, if you tighten too much you'll break the carb. Depending on how your new carb is set up now it might just bolt on and run but you'll probably need to tune the idle and mixture at least. If you're not comfortable with doing that yourself it will probably run at least well enough to get to a shop if there's one close by.

 

I'm just replacing it with a rebuilt, no upgrade, nothing fancy, just stock. I was wondering if the new one was set up from the factory. I bought it from NAPA. There are only 2 bolts holding the carb to the intake manifold, and the linkages and vacuum lines, which are all in good shape. I wouldn't no how to set up the mixture or any of that, so I hope its pretty close so I can take it to my mechanic if need be.
