looking at purchasing 1st SD... what to look for?
Ok,
I am looking at a F-350 crewcab dually that has been sitting at a place here locally for a while. I don't know anything about this truck as of yet but will try to go by and look at it soon. What I do know is it has the body (front cap) of a 80-86 f-150... boxy type. I am not sure if the f-250's and f-350's swapped styles in 87 like the f-150's. I would be getting this truck to pull my scca solo-II car and trailer to events all around the south. What should I be weary of on this style truck? Also I feel that it may need a new motor. They came with anything from a 4.9 I-6 to a 460cid gas hog. and a few diesel engines too. What would be my best bet if I do get it and have to replace the motor? I can do just about any engine swap if needed.

pretty hard to answer question. Watch out for cab rot, and frame rot, due to age. If a lot of miles, front suspension is most likely going to need a bit of work (ball joints etc .. i believe a 350 2wd would have twin trac beam, but 4wd should be monobeam and you wouldnt have as much worry) Any motor that came in those trucks is good in my opinion, the i6 will pull a lot, just might not be the fastest thing getting you there. a big worry with that age trucks in my area (NJ) is getting past inspection. feedback carburators, tons of vaccum emmisions junk all over the place. it will not have overdrive if you plan on driving real far real fast ( i dont think the srod 4 speed overdrive came in a 350) .. this may lead you to want to look for a newer truck. I have had a few 84's, but i bought mine all knowing they needed engines, so they were very cheap. good luckm, and after checking it out, u can post more specific questions for more help.
