Question failsafe thermostat

I thought all newer vehciles had "fail-safe" thermostats. Past weekend we changed out the stat on a 2000 Explorer because of an overheat problem. It failed shut. I put it in a boiling pot of water and it wouldn't open up . So is this failsafe thing a myth?

Some do, some don't. It just depends on who replaced it last.

Get a Cooper-Standard thermostat available from Auto Zone. They are the good Robertshaw stats. The Generation 2 stat or the Xtra-performance units are great. Stay away from Stant, I have had several of those fail closed
