Changing from 5.4L to 6.0L Diesel is it worth it?
Hi All,
I have a 2004 5.4L F250 4x4 CrewCab 8000Miles.
I get approx 11/13 Town and 14/15 Highway. I just went to the dealer today and looked at a 6.0L and took it out for a spin ( more power I will say ).
What are your thoughts, is it worth the trade to get more MPG?
Thanks

Well you will throw money away on your trade but if you can get a good price on the 6.0 I personally would do it. Don't expect a huge gain in MPG over what you quoted here. Where the diesel shines in in towing performance and fuel economy. If you put 8,000 lbs behing your 5.4 you may get 7-8 mpg on the highway, do the same with a 6.0 and get 12-13 while going faster.

i agree with what vegas said, one of the 6.0 shining points isnt its fuel economy. some say its a big truck so what do you expect, i say, the 7.3 got slightly better milege, so why doesnt the 6.0. If you do alot of towing, plowing etc. than the diesel is worth it. otherwise your truck is fine. If you want a new truck ,wait until the 05's are out for a while.

5.4
Town (lots of throttle) around 7-8 mpg
Highway (lots of throttle) around 11 mpg
Highway (easy on throttle) max of 15.5 mpg
6.0
Town (full throttle all the time) 12 mpg
Highway (90 to upwards of 130mph ) 12-13
Highway (peak, easy on throttle) 21 mpg!
The power of a chipped 6.0 vs a 5.4 is not even comparable. If you have driven the 6.0 STOCK you know what im talking about, add another 100-110 horses to that.
I personally would wait on an 05. I have an 04; the new 05's are going to have many more options and probably fewer bugs.

Adding horsepower to any engine shortens its life if used. Ever wonder why a slant 6 lasted so long? If a engine is designed for 200hp and you add 100hp guess what? Thats right less life span. This is not a 6.0 thing.

I had a '98 F-150 with the 5.4 l and I have an '03 F-250 with the 6.0 l and there is no comparison in the performance and the fuel mileage is considerably improved over the 5.4 l as well.
The best I did with the 5.4 on the highway was around 15 MPG and I routinely get 18 MPG with the 6.0 l in the same conditions. In city driving I get between 1 and 3 MPG better with the 6.0 l.
The most I ever towed with the 5.4 was a small utility trailer with a couple of motorcycles on it and it did fine with that. The reason I bought the 6.0 was to tow the 30' toyhauler trailer I was purchasing. It would have been dangerous to tow that with the F-150.
The motor is only part of the story as the 5-speed auto tranny is absolutely a HUGE improvement over the tranny in the '98 F-150.
Top off the mileage gain of the 6.0 with the generally lower cost of diesel fuel and over time you'll pay for the 6.0.

I had a 2000 F-250 Ext. Cab 4X4. Put 80K miles on it before trading it in for a 2004 6.0L with basically every option I thought I might ever need.
My response to you is very simple: Don't buy a 6.0L w/ a TorqShift if you ever want to consider driving a gasser again. I have never enjoyed a pickup like I enjoy my 6.0. It runs great and tows like a scalded dog...
Best of Luck.
You can't go wrong with a Super Duty, regardless of engine.

It may be hard to justify the price difference on MPG alone, unless you keep it a while or run a lot of miles, but it is nice to save 10-15 cents per gallon and there's no need to justify the awesome increase in sheer power. (Insert Tim Allen grunt here). With a better resale value you may come out ahead but it's worth it on other fronts regardless. Go for it.

I went from a 5.4L to a 6.0L. Don't regret it a bit. Well, I guess I miss the rumble of the exhaust a little.
Towed the boat over the holiday weekend. Kept it at 75 on the freeway, with plenty of power in reserve for passing situations. Gotta love that. The 5.4L wasn't as comfortable to pull with when even keeping the speed down to 65. Both trucks had a 3.73 rear end, BTW. Just to keep comparisons accurate.
I'd take the Torqshift transmission over the E4OD any day of the week.

I've had lots of 350 chebbies, a 2001 5.4 F150 Supercrew, and the 6.0 Crew Cab F250. Like the man said, don't get the 6.0 PSD if you ever want to drive another gasser. The power is awesome, and that's box stock! Seriously, the big truck does everything well except park. It will tow anything with absolutely no fuss, happily hauls anything that fits in the bed, and it's comfortable on long trips.
