Question Gears 10.25/10.50 axles

Why is there a difference when ordering gears for a 10.25 rear, You have to specify 92- or 93+...I am just curious here, My axle is an 87 and I can't seem to find anything higher than a 4.56 gear, I want to run 4.88 or even 5.13.

The guy at the shop that did the gear change in my 10.25" explained it to me, but I forget what the reason for the difference is. But, as I remember it, if you change to a '93^ carrier, you can run the 93^ gears in the earlier housing. Not entirely sure on that though. It does sound logical since TracTech lists only one part number each for thier Detroit Locker and Electrac differentials covering all years of 10.25 full-float and 10.50 axles, as does Auburn for their Performance Series ltd slip, ARB for the Air Locker, and Ford for the Traction-Lok. You might want to call Precision Gear or Reider Racing for more details.
