take it to another dealer and see what they say. they finally put new gears in the rear end of my grandfathers truck and the whine came back. one dealer said that the only way to fix it is to put a whole new rear end in it. i just bought a new '05 and it does not have the clunk or the whine and i have a little over 900 miles on it now.

Follow up
I saw this and my last input was over a year ago.
Took the truck to the dealer about 2 months ago, they installed the 'new and improved' ring and pinion gear assemby. This seemed to have solved the problem. Or so I thought.
I've noticed just this week that I hear a very faint whining beginning around 45mph. This is the same way it originally started. Right now, it is so faint it isn't noticable. If it gets worse, I'll be back in the dealer's face.

i dont know what the problem is with the dealers. its like they do not want to fix the problems and then it just makes the customers angry with them. this also turns some people away from certain brands of cars or trucks, but little do some people know, the other dealers (of differnt manufactures) service departments are almost the same. when i worked at a caddy dealer as a lot tech when i got out of high school i couldnt count how many times i seen people in the service department yelling because their vehicle was not fixed. i myself have also yelled at some ford derlers service department before. then because i made them pay for the custom wheel the messed up i was banned from there and they would not work on my truck anymore, even if it was an oil change.

In my opinion, the problem is with the manufacturer. They put heat on the dealership for doing a lot of warranty work. It's the "marginal" stuff that catches hell. Like my gears whine, wheel shakes, it clunks, clangs, and so on. The dealers can't ignore something that is broke, like the cab light leaks . But give them something that could go either way, the dealers will says it's normal so they don't have to fight with Ford, GM and the others.
I had a 72 Galaxie 500, new. After a few thousand miles it began to whine around 45 mph. I took it to the dealer and the said they couldn't hear anything. Knowing I wasn't crazy, I said lets take it for a ride and then they heard it. About 3000 miles later it came back. Went to the dealer and the same old story. This time I got up in the manager's face and told him it ain't right - fix it. He said we will have the zone manager look at it and decide. I told them that I will be going with them for the test drive.
Get this, I told the zone guy that the whine comes in at 40 and leaves at 50. He drove the car at 35 with the radio on and told me he doesn't hear anything. I told him to shut the radio off and get the car up to speed. He did and behold the whine was there.
The problem was with the ring. The ring was made from cheap metal and fatigued causing the whine. The mechanic called me aside and told me what the cause was and that Ford got a new assmbly from another source. He showed me the ring and the gear was near white where the pin teeth engaged. Put on over 200k on the car w/o a problem.
I recently had my message center replaced. At first it would go out then come back on. The service guy told me flat out that if they cannot verify the problem they will not fix it because Ford will reject the warranty claim. When it finally went out, no problem, it got fixed.

all the new f-150 's seem to have a slight tranny whine at 55mph or above. i work for ford and I noticed it in my f-150(2004 5.4l).we researched it and it is characteristic an normal condition of veh. it has been doing it for 30,000 miles and everything is still fine.
hopefully everything will be with yours also.

it has nothing to do with the four wheel drive its transmisision whine which unfortunately is characteristc.i work for a ford dealer and we go through this kind of thing every day. we hve checked every tsb,ssm and the like.even called the hotline. it is normal.you can change the gears all you like but it is only going to come back. nothing is going to break.
