Fuel Gauge Error

I filled up the truck this morning and drove about 4 miles back home. I just now noticed that my fuel gauge was sitting between 1/2 and 3/4.

My first thought was that someone had stolen some of my gas while I was parked at the gym, so I pulled into a station to fill 'er back up but it only took about 1/4 gallon. So the tank really is full but the gauge is wrong. Any thoughts?

Coincidentally, the truck was in the shop this morning for it's first oil change (free). As far as I can tell the tech did everything right. I checked the oil after I got the truck back and made sure there was indeed a new filt

I believe it takes a little while (not sure if it would take more than 4 miles) for the guage to calibrate from an empty tank to a full tank. I think it states that in the owners manual, it does for my 02 f-150

In the past, the gauge has gone to full immediately after the fillup. I didn't take notice today if it did that or not.

Did you have the key in the on position while filling up? Mine did that once when I had the key in. I've heard of others doing that also. Mine did eventually go to full but it took awhile.

My fuel gauge was stuck on 1/4 tank for several days after filling up. It has happened twice more. By the time the shop looks at it, it is working again. Go figure.

The gauge should pop up to full when you restart the truck after filling.

Thanks for the replies. My gauge went back up to full today. it did take awhile though, at least 10 minutes of driving.

I have seen this happen when the vehicle was left in drive position with key in on position while the driver was filling up.

Several months ago I watched a segment on national television about Shell Oil and why they had to close several service stations in the South because of high sulfur content in their gas.

The problem with high sulfur? Sulfur eats at the silver contact's on the sending unit inside your gas tank thus giving your fuel gauge a false reading.

Maybe not your problem but something to think about.
