Any how-to's on rebuilding the steering column on a 77 F250

My steering colum has a lot of play in it, and the signals are no longer working, I found you can buy a new signal switch so hopefully that will solve my switch problem, (4 ways work but not signals, already tried replacing the flasher and checked wires, they just stopped working all of a sudden)

I just replaced the shifeter sleeve and had to rewire the signal switch but made sure they are all correct now. My problem though is the play int he steerign colum. I can push the steering wheel down about 1 inch, the shifter sleeve will move with it, the entire shaft moves down, so I know its not the steering wheel on loose or nothing. Is this suppose to do this?

Also when driving the steering is really loose, the wheel feels really floppy in my hands and does not feel like I have much control. Any idea's?

I am new here so sorry for the ignorance on some of these simple things.

Check to make sure that the snap ring is in place beneath the turn signal switch. That is all I can think of that would allow you to move the wheel an 1" either way.

Also check the lower bearing at the end of the steering column.

humm snap ring eh? So this ring goes right below the signal switch? When I got the truck the steering sleeve was busted and the column was apart so I am not sure if the ring was in place or not. I don't recall a snap ring when I removed the broken sleeve but I will check it out, anyone have pics of the column apart?

Just search for steering column & see a blow-up assembly illustration

Sounds like the rag joint. A rubber coupler that attaches the lower steering column to the steering box. Check yours for play. It costs about $8 for a new one and makes a HUGE difference in driving.
