91 Explorer Transmission Advice please
about transmissions and most couldn't answer me or gave bogus answers. The more you read the better off you are. I'm trying to write down in detail my experiences and unusual observations. In doing the clutches, my first response was that I must be doing something wrong when I measure the clearance. How could a used transmission with over 85K have less clearance that the minimum. Shouldn't it have more? Then you understand that the last rebuilder put it back together without checking or caring. Then you remember that 6 months after that rebuild, the fluid had a lot of material in it that didn't show up in later changes. So it wore in till it had enough clearance. I hope it helps others to compare the theoretical with the empirical results. It's a learning experience and then I'll just go off and do something else that I have never done before. Too bad that so much information gets "lost" on the web.
