its a 71 motor.
if the intake is about an inch above the flat part or the block next to the dizzy then it is a 351M/400.
the 351M/400 has about inch taller deck.

i think you are a little fuzzy on the numbers? D1AE is a common casting code for Clevelands and 400's, probably W's and others. the other number you have there, 6U12-C, i think that's your casting date code. the "U" doesn't make sense though, that digit is for the month of the year. A is january, B is febuary and on. I is not used. M is december, there aren't enough months to get a "U", could it be something else? to differentiate a C from an M, i would look at the front of the intake right behind the distributor like F150daniel suggested. most but not all M's have a 1" high rib of metal standing up to the right of the distributor, and the intake is a good 1" higher than the top of the block near the distributor. a Cleveland intake is about flush even with the top of the block near the distributor.

From Tom Monroe's "How To Rebuild Your Ford V-8", page 24:
"Casting Numbers-Casting numbers are special engineering numbers placed on a casting to assist in identification by the plant. They are cast on a part at the time of manufacturing and apply only to the basic casting. One casting can be machined to make slightly different parts, thus creating several different finished engineering and service part numbers. Using casting numbers to identify a part is sort of like playing horseshoes. It doesn't count much when you're close, but it does count - and it very well may be the only number you have to work with."

Bubba is the man on this type of thing as it pertains to the 351M-400. Check his site for 351M-400 pics, and use the above guidance to see if you are indeed sporting a Cleveland. Here is the link to Bubba's photo archive. He has some casting numbers on his site as well.
