351 cleveland motor

How do you tell the difference between a 351 cleveland
and a 351 M and where are the casting numbers on them
I just got a 1972 F100 with a 351 cleveland I was told.

I was told that if you call a dealership, and give them the vin number they can tell you which motor you have. Also, if you call a parts store and give them the number off the plate in front of the carb, it can be determined whether it is a Cleveland or Windsor. Hope this helps with your question. I too am a new member, so welcome. John

351C engines were never available in trucks.

Hey Bob,

Well if it is a 335 series engine then it is not stock so a VIN check will not help you. 1967-1972 Ford trucks came with the 302, 360, and 390. Now for some confusion, the 302C/351C motors only came in Australian assembled F100s. These were sold in AU/NZ/SA but due to the Commonwealth laws, it was technically possible to import one into Canada via your local Canadian Ford dealership.....this would be a long shot so odds are your truck has a non-stock motor. In that case, determine if it is a 335 series engine and not a Windsor. Next determine if it is a Clevo or an M-block. The M-block intake manifold will be about 1" higher than the cast iron portion of the block where the thermostat housing bolts down. If it is an M-block, then your gonna have to do some real work to determine if it is a 351M or a 400. One meathod is to remove a spark plug and rotate that cylinder to BDC. Then insert a piece of thin wire into the cylinder until you contact the piston. Mark the wire and then measure the 2 points......however, this is only a shadetree meathod and you can be off by enough to think you have a 400. Best bet is to drop the pan and check the crank. A 400 will have a 5M, 5MA, or 5MAB cast into the crank where as a 351M will have a 1K. Hope this helps.

the 400 is listed for 71 and 72. quickest way to tell a windsor from a C/M/400 is by the exhaust manifold bolts. W's are all in a straight line and C/M/400's are diagonal across the exhaust port. W's have a bolt on aluminum timing cover, and C/M/400's have it cast as part of the block with a sheet steel cover behind the waterpump.

The 1971-72 400 was offered in the Ranchero but not the F series pickup. The following motors were offered in F-series trucks for 1969-1972:

170-1V
240-1V
300-1V HD
302-2V
330-2V MD
330-2V HD
360-2V
361-2V
390-2V

Quickest way to tell a Windsor from a Cleveland is look at the valve covers. The Windsor's trapezoidal shaped covers are unique.

Engine Identification:
======================
351C/M/400 335 series: 8 bolts in rectangular valve covers. Timing chain housing is part of block. Thermostat housing on block. Exhaust bolt holes diagonal.
351M/400 335 series: intake is 10.7" wide the 351C is narrow.
351W/302/5.0L 6 bolts on trapezoidal valve covers. Thermostat housing on intake. Exhaust bolt holes horizontal.
429/460 385 series: 7 bolts in rectangular valve cover
352/360/390/427/428 FE series: Intake goes under valve covers.
There are other indicators but these may help.

The casting numbers on the motor by the starter are D1AE-6G12-AC
marv0 List it as 71 to 80 400 so I wood have to call the Ford dealer
and see as the year it was made.
