Idling out of control

I have a 99 4.2 manuel tranny f150
The motor will idle high occasionaly after its been driven
for a while. ex. I approach a stop sign, shift to neutral while braking, and the rpm's stay high. Sometimes I can tap the accelerator a few times to bring down the idle. This has only happened a couple times, but it seems to be getting more frequent.
Can anyone help?

Glad you found us here in the 4.2 forum at FTE. Hope we can help.

Have you looked under the hood at the throttle linkage? It is a really simple setup that is easily viewed if you remove the plastic cover over the linkage.

The throttle cable directly operates the butterfly valve in the throttle body.

Check all that to see if everything is clean and free of any cause of mechanical binding/sticking. You can operate it by hand with the engine running to see if you can find any slight sticking point.

Check it out and let us know what you find.
