Gas Tank Conversion

Gas Tank Conversion
Hey. I just bought an old '56 Ford and I am trying to find some good options for moving the gas tank from the cab to somewhere under the bed. I want to move it partly for safety raesons (my mom is worried about it blowing up...) and partly because I would like to have the extra romm behind the seat. Any resources on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Do a search under mustang gas tank. I think that most of the people here use the 64 to 68 mustang tank and I think if you look in the tech section they will show you how to do the install. Here is the link. Ed

Also, there is an excellent article by John Niolin showing the step-by-step procedure on the mustang tank install between the rear frame rails. It is in the archive section of this site. Also, you can even ask the author if there are any points you get hung up on. If you don't want to remove the bed, I have seen people put the tank in the bed of the truck up close to the cab. Good luck, John Try: https://www.ford-trucks.com/articles...stangtank.html

I got mine for my 50 F1 from Kustomtanks.com aluminum and they made to fit for a side fill, I put the fill on the driver side through the frame and put in a 88 probe flip open door for the filler.

I just installed the 22 gallon tank from gastanks.com in my 54 F-100. I ordered the tank and sending unit for a 1970 mustang. REceived my order in South Mississippi in 3 days! Very impressive for a first time order. It required a little trimming on the inside of lower frame rails but looks and fits great. Many thanks to John Niolin as I used his info and pictures to go by. YOU ARE THE MAN!!! later, Steve

Maybe under the cab??
I'm working on moving my gas tank out of the cab on my 56. From what I understand, the most common place to mount it is between the rails behind the rear axle. My only concern on this is that putting the tank there displaces the spare tire. One truck i saw actually had the gas tank under the cab instead of in it. Has anyone here ever done something like that or does anybody have information on it?

tank under cab
yea, someone did it... FORD !! on the 53-56 modelsa the tank was under the cab behind the drivers running board... there are aftermarket poly tanks that fill that spot perfectly.
Losing your spare is a drawback of the mustang install... but mine will lay gently on my bed (with appropriate padding of course) ..

Uh John, 53-55 were the years. TYPO. John, do you know if there is a difference in the running board supports on the 56? I seem to recall that the earlier models with the under-cab tank had a different support that had flat areas to support the tank. If this is correct, then 56restore, you will need to locate driver-side supports for the 53-55. Also, I replaced the tank in my 54 last year. I bought the poly tank from Sac Vintage Ford. It worked great. John
