Angry EFI 460 swap Clutch Questions?

I got an EFI motor from a 1996 Ford F250.
I got a 1978 Ford F250 4x4 that came with a 400/NP435/NP205.
I'm attempting to put the 460 into the 78.
I got a flywheel from a 84 460.
I got a clutch from the same.
With the flywheel and clutch all bolted up to the engine. The Bellhousing hits the flywheel and keeps the motor from turning?
I found today that there is a deep bellhousing and a shorter bellhousing?
How do you know the differance?
IF you have a 4 spd behind a EFI 460 what clutch flywheel combo are you using.

Don't tell me to search been there done that.

My dad rebuilds starters and alternators for a living. I just bought an 84 f250 with a 460 and had him rebuild me one and he told me that 83 to I think 86 the standard and automatics used the same starter which would mean they use the same diameter flywheel. Probably if you get a flywheel for a newer 460 standard you will might be ok.

when you mean newer do you mean newer than 86?

If so I know your wrong there.

I've got a manual flywheel from an 87-97 460. And it has 8 mounting holes for the clutch. Well there is no clutch that I could find where the clutch disc fit the NP435 Transmisison. The ZF's have a MUCH larger input shaft diameter.

Were the flywheels the same diameter between the 86 and 87 to 97 flywheels? Was the 400 flywheel smaller? It could of been that the bell housing changed from 86 to 87 if that is when they started using the 5 speed. Sorry I couldn't of been of any help, I am not a 460 swap expert. Good luck.

As far as diameters i never really got that far. I belive they are the same but i never got that far due to the clutch issue.

but If anybody has an EFI 460 in there truck with a NP435 what combo are you using.... and what is the differance in a short vs long bell housing

..............EFI\TBI was introduced to the 460 in the 88 model year. The 4.9 I\6 rece'd it in 87 , I believe. The 5 speed was also introduced to the 460 EFI in either 88 or 89. I believe that this was also when they started putting Cats on the f250\350 with the 460. sk

The stock Ford flywheel on the 460 (both carbed and EFI motor) sit's back farther than the 400, this is why the 460 flywheel does not bolt right into a 400 bellhousing. The options are to space the bellhousing off the block farther, get an aftermarket flywheel, cut the flywheel down to fit the bellhousing, or take the bellhousing and hydralic clutch linkage from an '80's truck and fit it to yours. Bronco graveyard does sell an L&L flywheel for the 460 that fits in the bellhousing the same way the 400 flywheel did.

I appreciate this neverenough. I just pulled the transmission and found the problem. The flywheel is hitting the bell housing. I belive that the Bellhousing can be clearanced by taking about 1/8" off in 4 places. But thanks ..... .Better late than never
