Firing day part 2

Well the day has come, well gone actually.

Couple days ago, I finally got the truck fired. SOUNDS AWESOME!

running rich and I have no clue how to tune a carb so it will be going to the dyno very shortly. I have some video but my capture stuff is put away, I just got computer set back up because I got new flooring put in, should have the vid up in a day or 2.

What kind of carb is it? Maybe we can walk you through it. How do you know it's rich? Smell? Smoke? Plug color? etc. John

Edelbrock 600 #1406

Smells rich, and plugs were black and reek of gas.

You have the same carb that I do. It sounds like the idle mix is way off. There are two brass screws on the carb in front. To adjust the idle mix just warm the engine to normal temp. (The choke should be open to the completely verticle position.) Rev it a couple of times to make sure it is able to open. With the engine idleing at the normal speed, gradually screw one of the screws clockwise until you hear the engine start to studder. Then turn it counterclockwise 1/2 turn. Repeat for the other side. I mentioned about the choke because my buddy with a 289/1406 setup also had a very rich burn. It turned out that his new carb had a choke that was not adjusted to open correctly. It runs much better now. Good luck, John

I always adjusted mine for the highest idle. Turned the rpm back down to what I happened. Then I readjusted until I could not increase the idle.

Both methods will work. The Edelbrock book states to do it your way Chris, but the Edelbrock factory guy taught me the other way. I tried the book's method and could not tell when I had reached the optimum setting. So I like mine better. But, I'm sure it's just two ways to get to the same result. John

Congrats Joners. Your dyno man will be able to handle that carb. The Edelbrock needle and seat is real sensitive to high pressure fuel pumps. It sticks in my mind that you are running an electric mounted in the rear. 1406 will run well with 6 pounds or so. 8 or 10 can blow the needles off the seat. They make an offroad kit that seems a little better.

It seems to backfire or something through the carb when you rev it up. I've tinkered a bit with the carb, but I will try the above method(s)

As for the video I promised, here you go!

www.projectfordy.com/vids/firingday.wmv

Exhaust is Sanderson FF2 headers, 2.5" tubing, Custom H-Pipe, Flowmaster 40 series Mufflers and Gibson Supertruck tips.

Here's a pic of the custom H-Pipe

I couldn't open the video for some reason (probably low tech something on my end) but the picture is great. Very nice work and motivating for me to get back to work on my own truck! Thanks!
