Post Changing Automatic Transmission Fluid / Normal Use

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Dec-02 AT 06:32 PM (EST)]I Have a 93 Explorer with 82,000 miles!
1. How often do you change your Automatic Fluid with normal use??
2. Do you use the power process or just change the fluid in the pan??

Thanks,
Joe

With something that old, I would drop the pan and change the filter. There is a newer filter that you can use that is made for the later 5R55E transmision. It also fits the older A4LD. Ordering filters online can be very cost effective. Example, bulkpart.com has the SPX microfelt filter for about $10, you have to order the pan gasket seperately for about 70 cents. Even with shipping this is less than the $23 at the autoparts store. Buy a couple at a time! Don't put back in one of those useless metal screen filters. Spend a couple bucks extra.

OperaHouse, in your opinion, is an additional in-line filter needed along with the SPX filter in the 5R44E? I am considering one for my 00, but didn't realize Ford had gone to a better filter in the later model trannys. Maybe this newer type filter is all that's needed?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Dec-02 AT 09:58 AM (EST)]The earlier transmission used only a metal screen. The 5R55E uses the the newer Microfelt filter and it bolts onto the older A4LD even though it is physically 50% larger. The filter is actually folded over inside for three times the filter area of the metal screen of the A4LD. You allready have this filter in your '00. I just like having an extra quart of fluid and a little nore cooling that the external filter gives me. Sure makes the tranny flush easy. Balance that with the potential damage and leaks that can occur to the extra hardware of an external filter.
