Flowmaster 40 or 50 on an FE 360/390?
Hey, I posted this in the "exhaust/mufflers" forum as well. I'm posting it here also, because you guys are my brothers, and I don't know if you make to the other forum, but I still want to know what you think.
I'm trying to decide.
Engine is a FE360... will eventually be a 390 with a 941 cam. Presently only headers, intake, 670 4bbl, electronic ignition...
I've already decided on 2 1/2" dual exhaust dumping straight out the back
What mufflers should I run? Flowmaster 40 or 50? I could tell the dude at the muffler shop was trying to steer me to the 50's. Maybe he has a bunch in stock.
On a loudness scale of, say 1 to 10 (1 being quiet, 10 being illegal) I'd like to be in the 7 or 8 range (yeah I'm trying to **** off my neighbors).
Thanks for any comments, suggestion, or ideas.
Sam

I can't say that I have knowingly heard an FE running 50's - but I know that 40's sound great. I have that same setup: 2.5" duals running straight out the back to 3x18" tips. I haven't heard it with the 941 cam, yet, (hopefully tomorrow!), but with the stock cam it sounded good.
At idle, it isn't too loud, but it is dominant and "powerful." At cruising RPM, it doens't drone too badly and it is definitely louder than 99% of the cars around you. When you get on, whooo-wheeee, that's when this setup comes to life. At about 4k+, with all of that air being moved, it is a freakin' beast. I definitely recommend the 40's with your setup, especially if you like that "classic sound."
Definitely not as clean nor steady as Magnaflows, but certainly an old school sound.
I don't know how much your, or any of us for that matter, trust what other, non-truck guys say, but I got a lot of comments when I was driving my truck.
"Dude, that is almost as loud as those Harley's!"
"Dude, Pat, your truck sounds like death is coming for us."
"Slow down, I can't hear on my freakin' cell phone."
I'll be posting audio of a setup almost identical to yours very soon if all goes well. Hopefully no later than Wednesday, stay tuned!

I would go with 40's as well.
The long tube headers should keep them reasonable at cruise, light throttle, and idle.
WOT should put a hurtin' on anything within and 1/8 of a mile.
You're going to do a crossover pipe as well?
With a crossover pipe, and the long tubes, drone shouldn't be bad at all... at least that is true in the Mustang world...

Initially, when I put the headers on, I had to (I just felt obligated) to fire the thing up, with only the headers! Awesome sound indeed!

I have Thorley headers and 40 series Flowmasters on essentially a stock motor. It sounds pretty tough even though it is only about 250 hp. It wakes up my wife (and the rest of the neighborhood) when I leave for work at 6 am. I kinda wish I had done the glasspacks since I like their sound better, but the 40 series are by no means quiet. I have heard that the Flowmaster Deltaflow 40s are quite a bit different than the standard 40 series. I think they are quieter.
