Maf Sensor Question

I have a 94 aero w/ 82k miles. I cleaned my maf sensor following all of the instructions. However, I forgot to plug it back in. The problem is that I had no problems - no fault codes - no poor mpg, nothing. I read somewhere that the engine should not have run at all w/o this plugged in (or at least activated the check engine light - yes it lights when starting engine but goes off normally). I took it to autozone & checked if any codes - nothing.

Is this normal, or what should I look at

Thanks

You can try testing the MAF. Do you have a Haynes Manual? It actually sets forth a worthwhile test of the MAF sensor and circuit.

NOW... I have done this accidentally, when I was trying to figure out a rough idle problem (vacuum hoses) but I got the engine light immediately. Could it be that without the MAF sensor working it reverts to a set table for engine RPM until it is corrected? Odd that the light didnt go off though.

Off the subject a bit, would changing out the MAF to an aftermarket one (such as a Granatelli) help out noticeably with a 3.0L V6 Ranger? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Unless you are modifying the entire air intake system, then an aftermarket MAF won't help with much of anything. Save your $$.

Well yeah, I am building a custom cold air intake... wanted to know if upgrading the MAF will increase my performance that much more.
