Has anyone swapped a Diesel into an older (pre80) truck?

Has anyone swapped a Diesel into an older (pre80) truck?
My 79 has the factory 460 I love, with one rather large exception. The milage truely sucks. I have been contemplating a swap to a 6.9 or maybe a 7.3 cost permitting. No turbo is fine also, I can always add one later if I wish. I would also like a 4 speed auto (OD) but will probably go with a 3 speed for now. As I said, I can always upgrade later unless I can get the parts cheap enough to start with. I plan to buy a wrecked diesel from the early to mid 80s for parts to do the swap, so I'll take what I can get, anyone else do this?

Just my two cents worth...I have serched for trucks twice in the last 5 years. Both times I have found the 460's brought top dollar and the older diesels were cheap. (1994 Power Strokes and newer are the exception). You'd probably be money ahead to sell your truck for cash and then buy a truck that came from the factory with a diesel. I was looking for 1988-1992 F250s and found the 460s were always $1,000-2,000 more than the same year with the diesels.I live in the Pacific NW, your part of the country may be different. Deen

I get a paper from a company who takes engines out of wrecked trucks of any age, and they sell 6.9l for about 2000 dollars and 7.3's for about 2500. and the Psd's won't sell for under 2900.

Pastmaster is right in that it costs more to purchase a diesel ENGINE compared to a gas engine whether its new or from a junk yard. What I was getting at is a used TRUCK of same year in same condition will sell for more with a 460 than a diesel...go figure
Powerstrokes are the exception.
Powerstrokes are the exception.

one other item would be that the trans would also have to be changed, as the gas trans will not fit any 6.9/7.3 I agree sell your truck and get another one. I have an 87 F250 supercab with and ATS Turbo and exhause, and it screams like a 460 but with better MPG

Oh well, no harm done, right? While I'm here, can I bolt up a late modle ZF 5 speed transmission to a 460 manual bellhousing? How about those new 6 speeds? I'm running a mild 460 in my 86 bronco (I'll vouch for Uriah, the milage does sucks) with a C6. I'd like a manual, but one with an overdrive and a Granny Gear, as oposed to eather/or when you get a four speed. Thanks all, hope I didn't ruffle any feathers.

I just put a 90 7.3 and ZF 5 speed in my 79 crew cab 1ton 4x. It wasn't that hard. It took 5 days at maybe 5 hours a day from start to finnish. I maintained my spicer 205 T-Case which is much better than the 208s, I run the 410 gears and on a stack of bibles I swear that I got 24.4 mpg in an all around driving test. And my speedo is less than 1 tenth of in ten miles. My truck has around 12k invested and no doubt I would be lucky to get 8k, but its all new and twice the truck of a new one at 30k . Just "my" 2 cents of course. Rick
