Diesel newbie questions...
I am looking for a '93-'96 3/4 or 1 ton 4x4 crew cab with a diesel engine. I am completely new to the diesel arena, so I thought I would go to the authority on it- the Diesel Forum. I do all the maintenence on my trucks, so what am I looking at for routine maintenence on these diesels. Reading through the diesel posts gives me a good idea of what I am up against. It seems that there are heated discussions about type of oils to use. What seems to be the concensus? I also understand that the automatic transmissions from these years have slipping problems. Does Ford fix these free or what? This will not be a severe duty truck, but I will have to take care of it. Also, because I'm buying used, what do I need to look for in neglected engines? How can I tell if it was taken care of properly? I have been buying used trucks with gas engines for years and have no problems spotting junk, but I have "lived and learned" also. If I could get some feedback, it would help me greatly!!!

If you are going to buy a truck in these years, look for a 95 or newer, this is a Power Stoke Diesle (PSD) this is the new generation International motor. It is an electronic fuel injected turbo motor. It is by far more efficent than the naturally aspired 7.3 motor. The maint, is very simple, oil change at every 5,000 miles. Normal service of air cleaner, replace when needed or at 30,000 and fuel filter service at every 20,000. The rest is normal maint like belts and hoses. Trans service every 50,000, or at least once a year. The trucks are know for problems in the trans, and the only time Ford will do anything for free if it is still under warrenty. Many of these trucks came with 100,000. power train warrenty, depending on which year you buy. Look on foot pedals for excessive wear, too much braking for mileage on vehicle. Look for any oil leaks and the normal type abuse on the truck. Mileage, collision repairs etc.
Good luck.
