Question Tranny swap

My ole girl 53 Effie has a small block 302 (older large spark plugs) that's coupled to a C4 from the same donor vehicle (an 84 Country Squire I think). I want to swap the C4 for an AOD. What problems will I encounter? What problems will I run into with the starter/flywheel? Are the lengths of tranny the same (or nearly) Will I need to move the cross member?

Any help ya'll can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

You will need to change to a 164 tooth flywheel and a matching starter. If you want you can buy all the parts new from Winsorfox out of Ca. At least buy new bolts the trans mounting bolts are different then the C4.

I had to move the trans crossmenber back about an inch from my FMX trans position.

You will need the AOD trans yoke. I needed to have a new driveshaft made.

Buy the Lokar trans kickdown cable ( it really isn't a kickdown the correct name escapes me at the moment) Follow the instructions or you will get to rebuild your new trans also you might have to add another spring at the trans linkage area (I did).

You will have to make new shift linkage.

Smile Awsome

Sounds like this swap might have worked for you. Were you happy with the long term result and if I may ask what sort of a shifter did you opt for?

Thanks,

Hi

I have just driven it around the neighborhood, just to make sure it was shifting correct.

Still need to finish the body work and at least get it primerd hope to do this before summer is over.

I am using a Flaming River column with a column mounted shifter. I made my own linkage.

Red face

Hey Mike, I built my 53 Effie with a small block smog 302 and it's donor C-4. Dumped the Ford carb and manifold and went with an Edlebrock Pro-preformer 650 four barrel and pro-preformer manifold. The end result nice power (crusin power) and 13MPG

I hear an AOD is the sweet crusin/MPG combo. Besides my C-4 is slippin a bit and seems like the right time to change.

Talk to Chuck seems to be a step up on us.
