That price does seem high to me too. You should expect to get at least 250K out the the engine. That's comperable to about 100K on a gas engine. 250K is fairly conservative though. I've seen 1 PSD with over 1M miles.

I agree with johnsdiesel the price seems high, the owner should have a good grasp on the mpg. I've learned that mpg varys so much do to location, mods, and driving habits, let alone some stories that should only be told when fishing, that you can't really compare.

spoke with the owner today,i was told he gets 19-20 mpg.class 3 hitch,s/u for elec brakes, remote start 2 batteries, bedliner.ive seen this truck advertised for a while now,and i asked the seller if he had any bites, was told hes had a few lookers, some even telling him they can buy a powerstroke for 10k,he in turns says you probably can but not in the condition his truck is in.sounds like hes pretty firm on the price.hes only selling because right now the truck just sits,he only put 4k miles on it in 2 years.as faras ever towing anything,he toed a muscle car behind it when going to the track.

A truck that "sits" may actually be in worse shape than a higher mileage engine that is run every day. I still think the price is high. If he could provide receipts for service (especially the coolant additive) I would give a lowball offer and see what he comes back with.

Out here that's a good price on a 4x4 Powerstroke one ton with 80K-ish miles on it. If there had been one for around that when I was searching for my F350 I would have bought it. All I could find were high milers and some of them were asking more than $16K for them. I ended up with a 351 truck with only 37K miles on it...

On the problems from sitting issue, mine obviously did alot of sitting to have only 37K miles in over 10 years and it has had no strange problems with it. I'll take a low mileage truck any day over one that somebody else has already driven most of the life out of. Remember, the engine may last forever, but the rest of the truck still wears out at the same rate regardless of what kind of engine it has.

How much the truck is worth is highly dependent on location. In certain parts of the country, the truck you describe might seem overpriced, but up here in the Seattle area, if it's truly in excellent condition, the price isn't out of line.
The fact that Powerstrokes are priced so high up here is the reason my son-in-law bought his truck in Ft Worth. He saved a lot of money buying it down there instead of up here.

Good point Quadzilla. I actually bought my truck in Florida and was living in Connecticut at the time. I also wanted to get a truck that didn't have the "pleasure" or going through several winters in the Northeast.

Just bought a 96 F-250 powerstroke auto 4x4 130k miles for $2998.00. Thats right under $3000, runs great and is RUST FREE. Sure it has a couple small dents and scratches but who cares. Yes I had to go though the front end for $400, did the work myself.

So 16.5k for a 96 sounds outrageous, to me. I'm sure you can find a better deal just take some time and look around. Yeah I know I got really lucky on my purchase. But I wasn,t in a big hurry to buy the first truck I found. Good luck finding your new truck.

I just bought my 99 cc 4x4 psd XLT w/matching canopy up here in Washington for $19,000, with 112k on it. While I love the looks of the 92-97 body style, if you can bite off 16.5, I would recomend also considering a 99+ Super Duty for very little more. I also think 16.5 for a 96 is high. Make an offer for 15,000 firm. If he Does'nt take it, keep looking. Never get in a hurry, you will almost always lose. Trader Online is an excellent source for used trucks in and out of the local area.good luck!!

Camperspecial, you only pay tax in the state you're registering it in. You pay it at the time you change the title to the new state.

If you are looking for an automatic truck, buy one with an automatic. It's not worth it to do a swap between the two, especially on the newer trucks. The swap could easily add $3000 to the cost of the truck and would be alot of hassle. The 6speed is a good transmission and will be good if you intend to do alot of towing.

SoCalDesertRider is right, you only have to pay sales tax in the state you register the vehicle in. I paid no sales tax in Florida and paid it in Connecticut.
