Injector Pump Timing and Advance

I recently had a rebuilt pump that I purchased from a guy I met in this forum installed by a local so called "deisel Specialist"on my 86 6.9. He set the timing by the mark on the pump.It ran like crap and clattered and smoked BLACK!

After realizing this guy was full of it and I wasted the 150 I payed him to do the install. I retarded the timing and turned down the fuel supply inside the pump.(was turned up for a turbo) It's doing much better but I still think it should smoke less. The smoke is white when excelerating. What is the best way to tweak it without the proper timing equipment?
The guy also messed with the mech advance and I can't seem to get it right so I have it adjusted so it doesnt engage at all.

Every time I try to talk to someone in the diesel injection buisnes in Phoenix I get a lot of crap fed to me....They all want to pull the pump and calibrate it on a machine and get another couple hundred out of me.

Any shade tree advise as to the best process to use at this point would be appreciated.

Thanks........AlanT

Diesels need to have VERY precise fuel delivery. When the engine is cold the auto advance is designed to advance the timing 4 degrees BTDC. You often wonder how 4 degrees could make the engine clatter so bad. But my opinion is that the guy tried to rebuild it himself without the special equipment. You MUST have it calibrated by a machine for the engine to run correctly. If he put it together wrong it will cause the base timing, and the cold advanced timeing to be far off. Best bet is to have it done by a special machine.

In my manual, yes you line up the marks on the pump to the oil filler housing. Then the book suggests you have the engine "Dynamically timed" which involves special equipment and I would recommend you have this procedure done. After replacing the heads on my bro-in-laws truck we had the white smoke problem too. I mean BELLOWING white smoke. The pump was shot. Replaced pump still smoke but not as bad. Had it dynamically timed. Bingo, runs like a top!..Les

If you read my posting carefully the pump was rebuilt and running well on a guys truck that I met on this page.
He had the engine replaced with a cummins and kept the pump cause it only had about 20k on it since a professional rebuild.

The jerk that swapped pumps for me did not time it properly and messed with the arm on the side.

DOES ANYONE KNOW AN HONEST DIESEL MECHANIC IN THE PHOENIX AREA THAT I CAN TRUST TO TIME IT AND TWEEK IT FOR ME WIHOUT INSISTING THAT THE PUMP IS BAD AND JERK ME AROUND.

I got it to run better but still need to have it done properly by someone with the right equipment.

Any Ideas would be helpful !!!
