Cat back or turbo back?

On the '04 design, is there a noticable difference in performance gains between a cat-back exhaust system and a turbo-back exhaust system? I understand that there is going to be slightly more back pressure to the cat, but the cat is an open design and the real restriction should be the muffler. Based on some of the threads that indicate the 6.0 needs some back pressure, a cat-back system might be the answer.

I'd like to know the deal as well. I did inquire about it when I called the local 4x4 specialists and they said turbo back is best.

anyone?

IMO cat back only keeps you from having some issues with Ford if there ever is a problem.

If you are out of warranty go with the works, believe me as soon as min is out I am doing the works

I spoke with the ford regional rep and although not in writing,
both he and my svc mgr said no problem with turbo back as long as I kept the cat in and didn't put an exhaust brake in...

And mine has been in for svc many times since with no problems...

and the back-pressure statment has still not been verified in everyone's mind...

Yep...
I did wait until I had my "new car" issues tweaked to ensure I wasn't create an issue for myself... but at this point I feel somewhat "safer"...
but it would be hard to prove that the "tail wagging the dog" caused an engine problem :-)

You know that at times, Ford believes we have really big tails.

I Will Know The Truth Soon

I HAVE INSTALLED THE BANKS CAT BACK SYSTEM AND IT WAS NO LOUDER THAN STOCK AND I COULD NOT TELL MUCH DIFFERENT OVER STOCK, SO i HAVE JUST PURCHASED A FULL TURBO BACK SYSTEM FROM SILVERLINE

I hope to install early next week and will check back with result's , I am only swapping after hearing a simular truck with the same full system and it sounded like a jet liner, and the owner said it was big gain on power.

2004 f350 6.0

I have the Banks Exhaust as well. It sounds good going down the road. I did not notice too much power difference but then again I only had 300 miles on the truck when I switched the exhaust. It will be interesting to see what you think of the difference.

Yep, sometimes it takes "getting used to it" to be able to tell a difference...
I went from the stock 03 crushed downpipe to a 3.5" to 4" downpipe and it can't HELP but make a difference...
Seat of the pants I felt a difference... how much? I don't know since I have no hard numbers before and after...

Will take a picture of the stock downpipe they pulled off to show how ptitful it is !
Let say this - it is like a crushed and mishapen 2.5 inches compared to the smooth mandrel bent 3.5" which goed to 4 inches !!

I have an 04 and it already looks as though it is a 3 inch round DP. I am not sure that replacing it would do that much since it goes into the CAT anyway the same size.

Actually the cat is larger than you think....
when they had mine off it looked as if it was a good 4 inches free flowing type ...
just the lead in and exit pipes were narrowed to fit the stock exhaust...

It did look pretty big but I did not look at the center. I was thinking about taking it out altogether and putting it back if I needed to take it in for warranty but I will wait a few more miles for that.

That sounds easy, however in reality it would be very difficult to do.
What happens if dies on the freeway 30 miles form home.

And well, Ford will not be as mad at you as the Federal Government will be for leaving the cat out :-)
It is a Federal Law to have it in there.... and emission checks, inspections, police stopping you for something else and discovering this may be more of a problem for u :-)

And actually some have done 1/4 mile and dyno test and not seen any significant difference in the performance with or without the cat ....

One thing the cat will also do for you is tone down the Turbo-jet whine if you run an aftermarket exhaust...

While I think the turbo-jet sound is fantastic - too much of anything is not good :-)
