Wheel size for a 55 f-100

Ok guys, Im having a bit of trouble deciding what wheel application is going to be right for my truck. I was talking to some wheel manufacturers today, and one guy told me I might want to go with 8" rims all the way around, with a 4" backspace, and one guy told me they wouldnt fit on my truck (I think they will though).

If you look at my gallery, I want to go with the same basic look as I had, only I will be going way lower all the way around. (I plan on bagging my truck after summer.) I plan on getting those "nostalgia" style rims, with wide whites, but not as tall of a tire as I have pictured in my gallery.

In your guys' opinion, what will look the best, and how wide can I go, without running into any problems? These numbers have got my brain in a knot. Should I go with a 6" up front, and 8"s in the rear, or should I stay the same width all the way around for the clean DP-90 black, shiny chrome, slammed in the weeds truck I will have done one day. I know that the final decision is up to me, but suggestions are SOOOO welcomed.

Thanks in advance!

55,

I think you have to first decide if you are going with the same tire size all around or not. If you go with the "big and little" setup, I think 6-7 inch wheels on the front and 8 inch on the rear would look good if you can fit the 8 inchers under there. Personally, I like being able to rotate my tires and wheels so I'll be going with the same tire size all around. Since I don't want 8 inch wheels on the front, I'll go with 7 inchers all around...

Your current rims and tires would tell you where that width and backspace puts the tire in the wheel well. From these measurements, you can determine how much more tire can go into the wheel well and whether this extra width goes on the inside or outside, and then adjust backspace accordingly. Did I just make this complicated.

As Vern indicated, it will be dependent on your tire choice but if your tire size is different, front to rear, then front and rear can be independently adjusted for backspace.

Regards, John

I have the Volare ifs and 9" rear. I used the Stockton Wheel website to figure my setback. They are 15x8 with a three inch set back. I went with the same size on all four so I could rotate them. Good luck, John

Im thinking Im gonna go with a 15x7" with a 4" backspace all the way around.
I would go out and check, but my truck is STILL at my buddies shop. What is the stock rim size? Also, my 9" rear is 1" wider than the stock rearend, so should I account that in when choosing backspacing options?

Thanks alot guys!

55,

I doubt that referencing the stock wheels will help you much. Even if the 9 inch is an inch wider than the stock rear, stock wheels are pretty much set back under the fenderwells, and I've found that the wheels I've seen that look best are brought out closer to the fender's edge. With that in mind you still might want only 3 inches of backspace. Take your time here and be sure about the spacing. Check the backspace on any wheels you currently have and try to go from there...

And remember, when it comes to looks, wider wheels are the way to go, but they are a little stiff on the wide. If you end up choosing a more normal- width tire, the ride should be better. Good luck, John

Thumbs up

I put 15 X 8's all the way around on my 55. Tire size is 275 60's on the back and 245 60's on the front. I'm not sure of the back space but I don't rub anywhere and I have stock springs minus 2 leafs on the back (9inch) and mono's on the front. If I could figure out how to get a picture on this site I would post one. I don't know how many orange 55 F-100's are out there but I sure like mine.

Response to offer for 55 Hood

Hi 55 Forder, you're my truck angel, and just a 10 Hr. run west. Is the World Wide Web great or what? I had to find a Post from you, to respond to your reply to me today, indicating you could put me an a hood. As a new user, FTE says I have to have 15 posts before I can respond with an E-mail. So here's in thru the back door. My E-mail address for future correspondence is (Click Here to find out why email addresses are removed from posts.) and my Cell No. is 520-548-5216 Tell me what you'd like for that hood, which weekend you're around, and it's as good as sold. My 55... she's alive, and she will breathe fire once more! Now lookie here, they won't even let me post my E-mail address. O.K. so either respond to me by either posting a reply to my original thread, or call me with your Ph. # so we can get some business on the table. Thx. David P.S. I think Im gonna try to post about 6 test posts to navigate thru this initial limitation imposed on new users, so I can respond via E-mail. We'll see if I can pull it off that way.

So once again, hope you pink up this response to your very old post about Wheel / Tire sizes, and when you do give me a call 520-548-5216 We'll work something out. Your truck is awsome, I'm going for a similar look, but with flat grey and some original body color tatoos. Thx. Again David P.S.
