Can anybody give some details on general difference between those two , plus some data like HP. torkque, etc. with manual transmission.
I have F-250 6.9 1986 and I am thinking of buying 1995 F-350 7.3
need some advice....thanks

 

The passenger side valve cover on my 86 6.9 has two different HP's listed 150 and 175. Mine is the 175HP model. Torque should be in the ballpark of 300-325 ft/lbs. Can't really help you too much with the powerstroke. I would love one but it just occured to me that I don't really know for sure what the HP and torque specs are. Hope this helps.

The 6.9's unless they have California emissions are 175 HP and 315lbs of torque. The new 7.3 "PowerStroke's" are 215~235 HP and about 500 ft. lbs. (SAE net).

The powerstrokes have direct injection and they are turbocharged. The 6.9's use a pre-chamber where the fuel is injected and they never had a turbo. They only disadvantage about the powerstrokes is that they are extremely loud inside the cab, but if you want power then you won't mind the noise. The injection system on a powerstroke is very expensive to repair and the injectors are VERY sensitive to water. The injection system is not serviceable by the home mechanic, and most places even ford, do not know how to work on them. The people that I know personally have had great luck with their powerstrokes. Other's on this message board have had some real nightmares.

 

There were some indirect injected diesels built for the 1991 through 1994 model years with factory turbos installed. They were rated at 190 HP and 425 FT Lb of torque. For 2001 the F series manual trans equiped engine is rated at 275 HP and 520 FT LB. Most of the others are either 250 or 235 HP

 

How much of a job would it be to switch the 6.9 with the 7.3 Will the four speed work and what else would I need to add switch or change I have the wiring for the 7.3 and the 6.9 wiring is in the truck but I have a 300 in there now.
the truck is a 83 f250

 

Nice job finding this thread. The 7.3 swap would require the wiring and a dash swap. I could be wrong but I don't believe the four speed will work. That will be a lot of work. If you do it please take pics and share it with us!

it all depends on what year 7.3 you are talking about using. 88 to 94 7.3 will be a direct bolt in.
94.5 to 2003 7.3 powerstroke is going to be a lot more work because you are going to have to change the wiring harness to add the engine management computer.

Thanks for the swift reply guys I believe the 7.3 is the early model but it sounds like finding a 6.9 would be the best option for me I have to many projects going on to take on another big one lol
and I am assuming a 4 cylinder Cummings would be even a bigger project then the 7.3??
also when u said the earlier model 7.3 would be a direct bolt up did you mean to the four speed as well as the mounts

 

Yes, every thing on the earlier 1988-1993 7.3 is a direct bolt on fit to the 6.9, as they are basicly the same block. Exceptions are the heads and head bolts. If you had the bell housing for the 6.9 4 spd tranny, it will bolt to the IDI 7.3, and even the 7.3 stroke, although I don't know why anyone would want to go that route, as the 4 spd. does not have an overdrive.

 

new guy here...I did own an 86 6.9 supercab and currently own a 97 7.3 crewcab....power, 72 toyota vs a 69 big block camaro, mileage the 6.9 was great, the zf manual ran in the 22 range, the powerstroke with auto ran about 13 before mods. The 6.9 would slow down with my big boat on the back as soon as it could even see the hill coming, the powerstroke you forget its back there...of course its chipped. IMHO the powerstroke is much easier to modify for more power than the IDI, but the IDI is much easier to work on.

 

Unless you have a 4BT Cummins kicking around I wouldn't even consider that option for your truck.

That motor sells for around 2-3k around here easily and then you'd need a different transmission. As for wiring there wouldn't be any. Like four wires tops.

A 7.3 idi is your most economical option.

 

thanks guys I'm also going to be pulling a big boat around with mine, and have a load on with my quata, tanks, fuel, and gear so I would like the power.
i do have a Cummings but it sounds like to much of a project, I guess I will ether find a tranny to go with the 7.3 or find a decent 6.9 whatever I find first I guess have the $$ to buy whatever the truck makes money pulling the boat around so I don't mind spending it.
I appreciate all the advice it was vary helpful and probably saved me a lot of time and $$.
I will let you all know how I make out, the truck sat for 15 years i have had it on the road for couple months now, worked on it for about 7 months to get it stickerd and ready to go, I'm gonna keep putting new parts in it until it's back to its former glory. thanks again helped a lot
