Swaping 1994 IDI "stock" turbo engine, into 1990 F250 7.3
Is there anyone there, who knows what it would take, or how much trouble it would be, to put in a 1994 IDI Turbo into a 1990 F250 Ext. Cab, 4x4 w/5 speed... my engine has "froze up" at only 107,000 miles, and would like to put in this heavy duty engine. This engine, installed on 1993 1/2 to 1994 1/2 trucks has extra hard pistons, hardened and coated valves, and larger piston pins to hold up to the stock turbo... this was just before the PSD, and, I have read, that it will give the PSD some competition, not to mention, the much lesser maintainance costs!
I hope there is someone out there, who can help with this, I hope, it would be a pretty much straight swap.... the engine I have found, only has 20,000 miles on it, and looks brand new....
thanks,
Rick Fine

That is a very good engine. They are very durable and almost identical to the non-turbo 7.3's. I would go for it. The only thing I think you would have to do is to play around with the firewall flange. The Y-pipe may not clear the firewall flange (the seam where the firewall is welded to the cab.) Just in case you didn't know about the cavitation problem, you need to use a coolant additive, such as Ford part # FW-16 or Penray's Nalcool. With only 20,000 miles on the engine, it is still far away from being effected from cavitation.

LAST EDITED ON 27-Feb-01 AT 12:59 PM (EST)[p]The Turbo installed by Ford in 94 is made by ATS, when I installed mine in my 87 F250 I had to push the firewall above the trans bellhousing to allow for room to fit the exhaust. It was not too much and fairly easy with a large pry bar. The other items is that this motor uses a serp Fan belt, but I believe that it should fit straight in without too much trouble.
Oh One other item, there is a dowl on the right side of the trans bellhousing that you will have to cut off to allow the Y conector for the exhaust to fit. you can find out more from ATS at there web page or by calling them.
