Adding A Powertrax Differential Lock

I'm thinking about installing a Powertrax differential lock to my 68 F250. It has the 1 3/4" diameter outboard bearing ID, 2 3/8" rounded point wheel bearing lock nuts. Been told later in 68 they went to 2" outboard bearing ID and 2 9/16" lock nuts. I have 16 tooth spline axles. Richmond gear, makers of Powertrax show a unit for post 68 truck 3/4 ton with 30 tooth spline axle. Questions;will the 30 tooth spline axles fit my housing and has anyone used a powertrax unit? Are they noisy and do they "clunk" with normal street driving?
And where can I get new metal tab bearing nut lock washers with 1 3/4" ID hole? Thanks guys! Carl.............o&o>............................. ..........

Thanks RapidRuss; On the net Richmond shows the Powertrax for 30 spline only, my fear is if a 30 spline axle wouldn't fit in the early housing tube, mid 68 and older. I have the 1 3/4" housing tube, later 68 onward went to 2" housing tube. Question Russ, is the axle diameter the same on 30 spline as 16 spline behind the flange? I'll check with the manufacture tuesday as well as Jegs. My 68 F250 ranger came from the factory with 360 2 barrel, auto with 3.54 gears. It's got 42,000 original miles, now has a 410, 427 LR heads, ss valves, hard exhaust inserts,270/290 CJ cam,Edelbrock Performer,670
carb,Thorley headers to a custom X, 2 1/2" to 3" ending at 4 1/2", two O2 senders to tune. I'm about to install a Edelbrock F-427 intake. Next stage will be a 482" with MR heads. NUFF BSN4 NOW. Carl...............o&o>........................... .......

Sounds like you made a screamer! And as far as the powertrax goes..all I can tell you is call jegs or maybe even summit...and they will be able to send you the right stuff..

I put them in the front and back of my land cruiser They are kinda noisy but then I'm practically sitting on the back axle in it anyways so I can probably hear it more than I would in a truck. I wouldn't describe it as annoying though. You might also try 4x4 shops they might have more resources at hand to find something that will work than jegs or summit

Thanks again RapidRuss, I called up Reiderracing, (www.Reiderracing.com) they sell many different manufactures of limited and locker units. Was told that the old Powerlock 4 spider unit was the most durable. I have one somewhere (?) in my garage, saw it 8 years ago. With nine motorcycles, Miller 350 Tig, Miller 251 Mig, lathe and a Bridgeport mill plus other pack rat items including FE heads cranks and intakes. My top fuel friend who ran in the 60's-70's has specs on setting the clutch preload. I must find the unit to get the spline count for axles, then "test" the old 12.00 x 16.5's.
Two 40' black stripes is better than one 80' stripe. I twisted the 68 2" front drive shaft over 35 degrees, now have a later, 71 larger shaft. "Ya Gota Love Torque". Carl.

Yep Carl....There's nothing like being able to haze a pare of 12.00 16.5s...

And it makes for a thrilling ride to boot!! LOL!! Good Luck in your search! Russ

I was planning on intsalling the ARB air locker in my F250. Anybody have experience with those? Is the Powertrax a stronger set-up? Mine is a 67 with the Dana 60 but don't know much more than that about it. I'm building a 410 for it and should have about 450 lb-ft of torque so I want to make sure I have a strong enough drive train to handle it.

According to my Dyno chart I should be about 477lbs of torque @4500

and Richmond Gear told me the powertrax would have NO problem in that range?

But I guess time will tell?

Questions RapidRuss; As I don't have a Dyno program yet what program is better, the dyno 2000 or some other called EV or VE,(?) ? Can you run some numbers for me on your dyno chart? New motor will be FE, Bore= 4.245", Stroke= 4.250", CR= 9.30, cam advertised at zero lift, 270 degree In. @ .489 lift, 290 degree Ex. @ .498 lift, advanced cam 2 1/2 degree from straight up. Heads FE MR iron with 2.19" In. and 1.73" Ex.. Intake duel plane Edel. F-427/ Holley 670 cfm with Thorley headers 4 into 1, 1 3/4 primaries,2 1/2" duel exhaust with X and Edel. RPM mufflers. Thats a mouth full. Can you get me HP. and Tq. readings and at what RPM's each? Thanks "Gear Head", Carl.

RapidRuss: I was in "Pick & Pull" last weekend and found a 70 and 71 F-250, both had axles bolted on with straight holes in the axle, my 68 has taper hole axles with collets on studs with nuts. All had as mine 16 spline. What years did they come out with the 30 spline axle, for full floater only Dana 60's? Thanks,Carl. ..............o&o>............
