Changing Fuel Filter

I drove a tractor-trailer for 30 years, but am ignorant of diesel maintenance.
I recently bought a '87 F250 6.9 diesel pick-up. I'm a first time diesel owner, and want to know the procedure for replacing the fuel filter. I noticed a valve on the side of filter housing. Is that used to purge any air out of system after replacing the filter? I'm also assuming I should fill the new fuel filter with fuel before installing. I also read somewhere on one of these posts that the engine should be warmed up a bit before changing the filter which aids in easier starting.
Thanks, in advance.
