2 Probs - Excessive smoke, Loud!!! knocking
86 6.9 e-350
I have two issues and don't know where to start.
A) Excessive Black smoke (fog?) when accelerating, towing
B) Really Loud knocking. Like wear earplugs inside
I just purchased this and it seems to run very well, but except for the above problems. I've been reading through the site and have come up with some answers but am looking for suggestions (or corrections if I am mistaken) It seems that the injector pump has been cranked up - hence the excessive black smoke and heres the unknown, could the pump timing been advance (more power?) to cause the loud rattling noises. Here's another question is the rattling noise the pump itself or pre-ignition?
If I'm on the right track which problem should I address first? or is there something else?
Thanx

Welcome to the oil burner world. The fogging is, I take it, during hard accelaration or when pulling something ? I would tend to believe that the pump has been turned up. Some people think that if a little works good, then a lot will be better .... NOPE, not unless you have a turbo to inject more air to burn the excessive fuel. And the rattle is a timing problem. The timing is pretty easy, , , there should be 2 marks where the pump mounts to the tower. They will be towards the drivers front tire on the flange of the pump and the tower. If they are together, the pump is about 4 degrees BTC and if the line on the pump flange is more towards the top of the flange, it has been advanced. Dont change the timing with the engine running. The pump will be a little hard to move if it is advanced due to the fuel lines being moved and probably got some pressure on it for some time now, but it is normal to have this pressure OR it just might move right back to where it belongs. Try it . If you get more questions, get back to us. MALCOLM just loves getting in here, and he is usually pretty good about things. (unless he's tipsy ). White lightning does that.

check the timing. the marks on my engine are on the top. slightly off line. Not too bad to adjust, once I removed the alternator, air pump, thermostat housing. Still Loud, maybe its the valves, too loud to pinpoint any specific area. Maybe its time for some white lightning, We call it Everclear.
